International Students Seek Alternate Routes to Get to China

Although China has now allowed International students to return to their universities after two years plagued by the pandemic, and visas are provided in response to no-objection certificates (NOCs) from colleges, they still have difficulty getting to China, because of the high cost of air tickets, and difficulties in booking flights.

But many of them are desperate to go back onto campus. Some Indian students are asking the government to organize chartered planes because there were no direct flights from India, and others are figuring out alternate routes on their own, such as via Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Dubai, and Hong Kong SAR, among others, to travel to China.

One student, who made it to China despite all the difficulties, made an online demonstration of how she made it for those who haven’t yet decided which option to pursue.

Sudipti Mundirinti from Mumbai, who is a student at Nanjing Medical University, arrived in the Mainland of China via Hong Kong SAR, said that although she had been successful in booking a chartered flight to China, it had been costly. Just the ticket is about 8730 RMB.

“And still, I spent more than 4,365 RMB on air tickets to travel via Hong Kong SAR. And because you have to submit to Covid testing and pay for the quarantine, once in the Mainland of China, I had to make additional financial arrangements to follow the required Covid protocol of both Hong Kong SAR and Mainland of China.”

According to Sudipti, the cost of quarantine varies based on the city you land in and the facility you are transferred to. It falls between 175 RMB and 525 RMB per day.

Sudipti’s information shows that in order to get the green code and board a flight to China, one must have two consecutive Covid-negative tests (48 hours and 24 hours), for which he/she must stay in Hong Kong SAR for three days.

“After arriving in China, the administration may assign any facility that is available, and the user is responsible for any associated fees for the first 10 days of central quarantine.

One chooses a location for the quarantine’s remaining seven days. It’s a good thing I landed in Nanjing since I didn’t need to undergo the third step of quarantine, which is another seven-day period.

This holds true for students who must travel within China to get to their university. However, because it is offered by the relevant university, it is free,” according to Sudipti, who left Kochi on September 24 for Hong Kong and arrived in China on September 28.

However, another student, who desired to remain nameless, did not have as much luck.

“I had several vitamin deficiencies, which made me ill. But after obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC), a visa, and even plane tickets, I decided not to pass up the opportunity to resume my studies in China in offline mode.

But after arriving in Hong Kong, a swiftly provided fast antigen test revealed that I had Covid (RAT). In Hong Kong, I had to quarantine, which makes sense given that there was no green code. My process didn’t pick back up until the following day’s negative RTPCR report,” according to the Delhi-based student.

“However, there hasn’t been much progress on that front (chartered flights). Students have begun figuring out different ways on their own to get to the institutes as deadlines get closer.” according to Andrew Mathews, president of the Foreign Medical Graduates Parents Association (FMGPA), which last month wrote to the Union Ministry of External Affairs (MHA) requesting that chartered flights be arranged.

The Idea to book chartered flights is still in place for the time being. According to information given by Indian students studying in China, a group of students planning to return has contacted Southern Airlines to arrange for chartered planes. But the cost per student will exceed 10,000 RMB.

And only if we reach our enrollment goal of 250 students will this be possible, according to Dr. Shahroz Khan Sherry, an Indian student at the Nantong Medical University in China.
