Many people in Singapore were shocked when they found that the 12,500 free round-trip air tickets to Hong Kong were snapped up in less than an hour after registration opened.
The tickets, offered by Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, were up for grabs in Singapore from midday on Thursday, local time.
A participant whose queue number was 105,347 said there were 99,591 people queueing ahead of her when she accessed the site at 12.28 pm.
She was allocated an estimated wait time of more than an hour.
Another participant who accessed the site nine minutes after the opening said that his waiting time was also over an hour, he said there were more than 76,000 people queueing ahead of him.
43 minutes after the opening, the website reverted to a message telling participants that all tickets for the Singapore campaign had been awarded.
“We are very encouraged by the enthusiastic response from our Cathay members who registered for the 'World of Winners' ticket offers campaign in Singapore today,” Cathay said. “The 12,500 round-trip tickets on offer were allocated within the first hour.”
Cathay added that its website had functioned as expected during the registration period.
Successful applicants will however have to pay for the taxes and surcharges.
The giveaway is part of Hong Kong’s 500,000 free ticket campaign to bring tourists back to the Asian financial hub. On Wednesday, the city formally ended its outdoor mask mandate, one of the last remaining Covid prevention and control measures in the city.
Other Asian Countries' Schedule
The tickets will be allocated in three waves: from March 1 to people across Southeast Asia, from April 1 to people living in the mainland, and from May 1 to residents from the rest of the world.

Registrations for the free tickets began with Thailand on March 1, followed by Singapore on March 2, and people in the Philippines were the next in line to grab their share of free tickets starting March 2. The country has been allocated 20,400 round trips.
Participants must queue virtually on the platform and must answer three simple questions to win one economy class round-trip ticket to the city.
Singapore winners will be announced on the company's website on Mar. 20. They will also be notified via the email they provided during their registration.
