The decision was made by the judge of the People's Court of Liucheng County on March 23.
It is reported that Tang had found an antique bronze chime clock while digging sand in the Rongjiang river channel in Liucheng. He took the clock and kept it in his own home for two years before selling it to another person.
The court documents show that Tang later put the clock on display on a street near a bank on Baiyang Middle Road in Dapu Town, and someone bought it for 300,000 yuan.
The clock would later change hands several times before authorities were notified that it was an antique bronze chime clock from the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), and it is classified as a national second-level cultural relic.
China prohibits individuals from profiting and (or) reselling such cultural relics.
Thus, Tang's action constituted the crime of reselling cultural relics, the judge said, but added that considering that Tang had voluntarily confessed to his crime, he was given a lighter sentence.
