A Nigerian singer, who is known by his Chinese fans online as Fantis, has won the heart of millions of followers on social media platforms in China.
He confesses his love for Chinese culture, and he publishes covers of Mandarin as well as Cantonese songs on his social media accounts. He has more than 2.2 million followers on Douyin alone, who affectionately refers to him as the "Nigerian Treasure Boy".However, many fans noticed a disturbing video and a screenshot of him that was circulating online earlier this month. The screenshot was a collage in which he can be seen with a local woman showing their marriage registration certificates and below it, there was another image showing the woman's face swollen with black eyes and bruises. They shared the screenshot in his videos' comments section asking whether it was really him. He only replied to such questions with "I have already reported to the police."On the surface, those who shared such pictures seemed to be concerned fans who wanted him to clear the air, but in reality, 99 times out of 100, these "concerned fans" were further spreading the rumor, be it intentionally or not.
Some used leading or suggestive questions in which the reader of the comment would conclude that he really beat the woman, no matter how he answered the questions. "You beat women?" Asked one user.Fantis published a video in which he assured his fans that there is no such a thing and that he has reported the matter to the police. He added that he had seen the video by the original poster, but he did not take it seriously as he thought no one would believe it.However, as more people started questioning him, he decided to use the hand of the law to curb the spreading of the false rumor."Statement of apology for infringing on Fantis' portrait rights." Read the heading of the public apology he received from a user."I published fabricated images and videos containing Mr. Fantis's image without confirming their authenticity because of my carelessness. The above actions have caused a bad social impact and I wholeheartedly apologize to Fantis."I will seriously reflect and make sure that such things won't happen again. I have also deleted the video which infringes on Fantis' portrait rights. I promise that I will never repeat the same mistake again. I apologize once again."He later published another video, sharing with his users that those who made such videos have apologized and deleted the videos.Fans supported him for using the hand of the law to deal with the rumormongers. What do you think and how do you deal with rumormongers?
