Outrage on social media has been generated by a Chinese dad who is accused of physically abusing his daughter-in-law because she was wearing “hot pants” on a hot summer day.
After the incident, the woman, who goes by the surname Xu, from the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan, put a video online outlining her version of what happened on June 12th, according to Feidian Video.
The attire her father-in-law objected to was worn by Xu in the video, which shows her wearing white shorts and a green long-sleeved top with scars showing on her face.
Xu claimed that the attack began when her father-in-law, who was not named in the report, reprimanded her for wearing unsuitable apparel at the dinner table, claiming that her shorts were too short.
“If you go out like this, the neighbors will feel shame for you,” he said.
Xu said she was angered by his rudeness and defended her choice of outfit.
“I spend my money on my clothes. I do it my way,” Xu told her father-in-law.
But he continued his verbal attack.
“What a cheek!” he said.
Xu raised her voice and said: “Can you stop this while we are eating?”
Her father-in-law suddenly became physical, throwing a handful of peanuts in her face before upending a bowl of hot soup onto her. The pair then came to blows with the father-in-law scratching her.
“Both of us were injured,” Xu said.
Xu’s nine-year-old son pulled her away to a bedroom and locked the door.
“I’m getting you killed today,” Xu’s father-in-law reportedly yelled after her.
At this point, Xu called the police, who, after learning what had happened, told her father-in-law her clothing was not causing any harm and asked him not to harass or assault her.
Later when she called her husband at work, instead of offering sympathy he sided with his father and asked her not to wear the outfit in the future.
Xu said that she had asked her husband to come home to help smooth things over with her father-in-law and that she would give him a second chance.
“If he has the same attitude, I may think about getting a divorce,” added Xu.
The story has triggered widespread criticism of the father-in-law online.
One person asked incredulously: “We’re not living during the Qing dynasty; why can’t she dress like that?”
Another said: “How dare he threaten to kill her? Too horrible.”
