She then took a train from Los Angeles to the Palm Springs area, where she was picked up by John Root Fitzpatrick, who was supposed to show her around the Morongo Basin.San Bernardino County police and Jin's family have issued a missing person's bulletin, appealing to internet users for information about the whereabouts of the two individuals. The family has also initiated a fundraising effort on multiple websites to raise US$10,000 as a reward for informants who provide tips about Jin.Rumors have been reported by multiple accounts that Jin is missing on purpose because she intended to stay in the United States. However, Jin’s daughter, Lin, has refuted such rumors about her mother. She clarified during an interview that her mother had booked a return ticket and was scheduled to return to China in October this year.Lin added that her mother is an avid traveler and has lived in Europe for a long time. According to Jin, her mother often travels alone to many regions overseas as well as in China and has never had any problems or accidents before. She said during an interview that Lin returned to China during the pandemic after spending many years traveling in Europe.Lin also said that her mother had been in contact with Fitzpatrick for several months before taking a train to meet him.“My mom never said she wanted to develop a romantic relationship. Her itinerary back home has been well arranged. She had no intention to stay in the United States for a long time or develop a relationship with the man. We have also noticed that it has caused a lot of rumors, which undoubtedly hurts our family.”
