Three foreigners were filmed in Guangzhou, southern China's Guangdong province, trying to flee from a taxi without paying. And when the driver confronted them, they mocked him and took photos and video clips of him, sparking anger and resentment from netizens after the videos taken by bystanders were shared on Chinese social media. The incident took place on August 6 this year. The taxi driver told reporters that the three individuals took a taxi but when they reached the destination, they got off and started to run without paying for the taxi fare."They not only refused to pay for the taxi fare but they also mocked me when I asked them to pay, they even took out their phones and started to take pictures and videos of me pleading with them to pay for the fare." The taxi driver told reporters. The taxi driver said he got a hold of one of the men's luggage and refused to let go until they paid the taxi fare. However, two other foreign nationals were giggling and kept shooting videos of him using their mobile phones.
After a little struggle and when the three realized that they could not get back the other foreign national's luggage, they finally agreed to pay the taxi fare. The taxi driver did not report the matter to the police and told reporters that he would not press charges, but the incident has caused an impact on how foreigners are perceived in China. It is worth it mentioning that this is an isolated case and does not represent all foreigners in China. However, recently, there have been numerous reports of foreign nationals refusing to pay taxi fares in China.
