A company staff whose salary was reportedly 6,000 a month was arrested after embezzling 123 million yuan from his employer, and used the amount to tip female streamers on mobile apps.On September 21, the Procuratorial Daily magazine's official account published an article about the case of Liu Mingsheng, a married man who worked as an accountant in a private enterprise. In 2019, Liu downloaded a social media app and casually used it to watch live streams of a female streamer identified as K Bao. Liu gradually grew attached to K Bao after watching her few live broadcasts. To get her attention, Liu started tipping her with 200 to 300 yuan during the broadcasts. When K Bao flooded him with sweet words and thanks for the tips, Liu quickly fell in love with her. Consequently, he became the most frequent viewer of her streams. He's reportedly developed a habit of watching K Bao's live streams at work, initially during breaks and then developing to the point that he would watch her live streams while working, which led to him making frequent mistakes in his work.He got so addicted to K Bao and wanted to meet her in person. However, he quickly realized that the platform had a rule saying that to meet the requirement to meet the streamer in person, one had to be the top tipper and featured on the top of the tipper's leaderboard. He also noticed that the girl was extra flirty with the current top tipper which made him jealous and deepened his feelings for her. But with a salary of 6,000 yuan a month, he knew he could not satisfy the requirement even if he tipped her all the money. This is when the thoughts of stealing from his employer kicked in. As an accountant, he thought he could just "borrow" 20,000 yuan and repay it later. Which he did, albeit, without repaying. He said he was so afraid and trembled uncontrollably when he took the 20,000 yuan. However, the competition to become the top tipper was tough as other men were donating aggressively and this clouded his mind and he started stealing more and more from the company. With an unlimited supply of money from the company, Liu finally became the top tipper and featured prominently at the top of the tippers' leaderboard. Now that he had met the requirements to meet K Bao, he arranged for a date. In order to match the big boss persona he has created on the live stream platform, Liu rented luxury cars, took K Bao to high-end restaurants, and purchased luxury goods as gifts for her.The two became lovers and engaged in sexual relationships.Liu, however, did not stop with K Bao, as he was later reported to have done the same to 2 other female streamers on the platform.Embezzled 120 million yuanIn early 2022, his employer discovered that there was a significant amount of money missing from accounts managed by Liu. The employer used year-end reconciliation as an excuse to set up a meeting and called Liu back to the office to verify the accounts he was managing. When Liu realized that the company had found out what he did, he was scared and ashamed to meet them. He contemplated suicide at first as the only way out, but when he thought about his wife and parents at home who needed him, he hesitated. Finally, Liu confessed his misdeeds to his colleagues who accompanied him to the police station and he surrendered.According to the report of the investigation by the police, Liu had embezzled a total of about 123 million yuan from the company's accounts. K Bao took the largest share of the tips, with a total amount tipped to her reaching 90 million yuan.Liu also tipped another streamer 6 million yuan, and 4 to 5 million yuan to the third one.The police were able to recover 122.68 million yuan through joint operation efforts with the judicial authorities. In May 2023, the Zhangjiagang City Court made a first-instance judgment, stating that the defendant was guilty of embezzlement and was sentenced to fourteen years in prison, with a fine of 500,000 yuan.He was also ordered to repay the company for the amount that was not recovered by the joint police forces, amounting to 430,000 yuan.
