A Chinese woman, aged 29, was handed a jail term of five weeks and five days, along with a fine of 600 Singapore dollars (US$438) on Oct. 25. Her offenses included verbally assaulting nurses and police officers, and working as a hostess without the necessary work permit.
Han Feizi, appearing through a video link, admitted to five offenses. These included using criminal force, causing distress to security guards at her residence, using abusive language towards a hospital staff member, creating public disturbance, and providing false information in her work permit application.
Three more charges were considered during the sentencing.
Han expressed remorse in court for her actions and comments made on social media. She explained that she yelled in the hospital out of desperation and in need of help.
She also shared that three of her family members were battling cancer, one of whom was in the terminal stage. She stated that she came to Singapore to work and financially support her family.
The judge sternly criticized her conduct during the sentencing, describing it as “uncouth,” “combative,” and aggressive. He stressed that there was no excuse for her behavior.
On October 3, around 9pm, an intoxicated Han returned to her residence at The Sail at Marina Bay, Marina Boulevard. Two security guards noticed her squatting in a public area and offered help.
However, Han pushed one of the security guards and repeatedly used offensive language while waiting for and inside the elevator.
Furthermore, around 2:25am on October 10, an intoxicated Han sought medical attention at the Singapore General Hospital’s emergency department. She claimed that a taxi had run over her foot.
Medical personnel advised her to wear a mask. However, she not only refused but also insulted them.
When the police arrived, she refused to cooperate with the investigation, withheld her identification, and recorded the investigating officer with her mobile phone.
Han later posted the video on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok). In the video, she claimed to have waited for three hours without seeing a doctor. She admitted to using offensive language towards a nurse and suggested that she was discriminated against because she wasn’t Singaporean and therefore not entitled to medical care in Singapore.
On October 11, Han was arrested. On the same day, police suspected that she might have breached Singapore’s Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
Court documents revealed that when applying for a work permit on August 11, Han falsely stated that she was employed as a clerk at KDL Elements. She also hid the fact that her earlier application for a student pass had been denied.
From August 1 to October 11, Han worked as a hostess at various places in Singapore without possessing a valid work permit.
