A Chinese vlogger was traveling in remote villages in Guizhou when he met a foreign national working in a field. He got curious and asked him if he could go with him to see where he lives, to which the foreign national agreed.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The vlogger said in the video that he was surprised to find that the foreign man in his 20s has been living in the village for more than 20 years, since 2002, with his father and mother.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Their story is intriguing as many foreigners choose big cities where life is comfortable and there are more opportunities to make a living.
The vlogger learned that the family is originally from Holland, but they lived in Belgium for many years before relocating to China in 2002. That year, the man's parents sold their house in Belgium and moved to China with their 3 sons.
The family lives a humble life in a village in Guizhou, where they help underprivileged people and now work as farmers to make a living.
The son told the vlogger that throughout their 20 years in the village, they had never had a stable income and depended mostly on the money they got from selling their house in Belgium.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
"My parents saw that there were many people who needed help, so they volunteered to help, we have no income." The man said.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
"So, you sold the house back home, you don't plan to go back?" Asked the vlogger.‍‍‍‍‍‍
The foreign man replied "Yes, you know what's funny? My grandparents also asked my parents the same question."
They now live in a rented house in a village in Guizhou, paying 1,500 yuan every month.‍‍
All expenses, from the rent and the money they use to help those in need, come from the money they got after selling their house in Belgium.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Now that they have depleted almost all the money, the family depends on farm work to earn a living, of which they make about 5,000 yuan each month.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
However, they still help those in need, such as paying for their medical expenses and buying groceries and stationeries for kids.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
When asked about whether she regrets settling in China and if she had a plan B or plans to return to her home country, the mother affirmatively replied that China is her home.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The son hopes that his farm work will pay off in the long term and help more people. He said he would stick to staying with his parents in China, although his two brothers have gone back to Belgium.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
While many foreigners choose big cities in China as there are many opportunities, some are doing the opposite and choose to help the underprivileged overcome difficulties at their own expense.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The story received more than 300,000 likes and attracted hundreds of millions of views on one social media platform alone as of press time.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
