A college student who is on a full scholarship for the disadvantaged at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has been snubbed online for her luxury spending.She became the center of attention on social media after a fellow schoolmate published a post on Tieba, claiming that she uses a "full range of Apple products" (a term used in China to describe someone who has bought all devices made by Apple such as iPhone, iPad, iWatch, AirPods, Apple Pencil, and Macbook), and has recently bought a 1,517 yuan ticket to attend a concert.The schoolmate stated on the post that the student is living a luxurious life while she is on a full scholarship aimed at financially disadvantaged students.Reporters learned on November 15th that the school has acknowledged the matter and is now conducting a comprehensive investigation and verification to take action.The post attracted a lot of attention online, with other students commenting that she was not entitled to the scholarship. Despite using a full range of products made by Apple, the revelation that she also bought a 1,517 yuan ticket to attend Jackson Wang's November 25th concert incited public anger among schoolmates.The poster also disclosed the student ID information of the person involved.Using the student ID, people were able to search the school database and revealed that she was enrolled at the university in 2021, and received a scholarship offered to students who are "very disadvantaged."
A staff at Sun Yat-sen University told reporters that the scholarship is administered by the Student Affairs Department of the school's Party Committee.After contacting a staff member from the Student Affairs Department who is responsible for awards and scholarships, he told reporters that they will investigate and verify the case.Another person who is in charge of the Sun Yat-Sen University Zhuhai Campus told reporters that they have paid attention to the relevant post on Tieba and are conducting a comprehensive investigation and verification of the evaluation process and the student situation.
