A female student from the Mainland was charged with two counts of falsifying documents and submitting them to the Immigration Department of Hong Kong. She was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for the offense.
The 34-year-old woman entered the city with a student entry permit to study a master's degree course in June this year. She then applied for dependant entry permits for her husband and daughter in July, submitting a water and electricity bill as a proof of her residence in Hong Kong.
The Immigration Department staff found discrepancy in the application materials and decided to verify them with public utilities companies, and confirmed that the bills were falsified.
However, when the staff interviewed the woman, she insisted that she was residing at the address shown on the utility bills. He reported her to the authorities who launched a formal investigation on the woman.
She admitted during the investigation that she was not residing in Hong Kong and had decided to submit the falsified utility bills to the immigration to help her dependants secure entry permits.
A court in Sha Tin charged her with making false representation to immigration officer and using false documents. The defendant pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the Sha Tin Magistrates' Courts on December 7.
"Under the laws of Hong Kong, any person who makes false representation to an Immigration officer commits an offense. Offenders are liable to prosecution and, upon conviction, subject to the maximum penalty of a fine of $150,000 (about 136,830 yuan) and imprisonment for 14 years.
"Moreover, any person who makes, uses or has in his custody a false document commits an offense and is liable to prosecution and, upon conviction, subject to imprisonment for 14 years," an immigration spokesman said.
