A video of a school opening ceremony in a university in Shanghai is going viral online after the school's principal told students that 15 freshmen had been diagnosed with HIV.
The principal urged the students to be careful with their interractions because the school could not make public the identities of the 15 infected students.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The announcement was greeted with boos from the students but the principal insisted that the students should be careful and get along well with each.‍
The video quickly went viral and many reports have been made to remind the students that HIV is not transmitted by air, and that the possibility of being infected by the schoolmates is almost equal to zero if they don't mess around.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
However, the news took a big turn these two days after influencers took the video and made their own interpretations. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
A quick search on the internet revealed many articles questioning whether the infected were international students or not, and others affirming that the infected were international students.
The interpretations started as a question, "Are the 15 infected students local or international students?" And then developed into an affirmation "15 International Freshmen Infected with HIV"‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
As the school principal had stated that the identity of the infected students would not be released, influencers have taken that as an opportunity to create a false narrative claiming that the infected are international students.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Nevertheless, many have expressed that they wouldn't worry or stigmatize the infected as the main purpose of going to the university is to study and not engaging in relationships, which can lead to activities that risk getting infected.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
"You shouldn't worry if you don't mess around because HIV can not be transmitted by shaking hands or air, so if you worry about it then it means you do not have a healthy lifestyle in the first place." Said one person in the comments.‍‍
