The Civil Aviation Administration of China announced on Saturday that it will strive to significantly increase direct flights between China and the United States in 2024.Official data shows that the number of regular direct passenger flights between the world's top two economies has already increased to the current 63 per week. The Civil Aviation Administration added that China will also actively expand air traffic rights arrangements with countries along the "the Belt and Road" and deepen cooperation with Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa in 2024.The government will also put more effort to improve visa and border control policies, and further promote the customs clearance process.Meanwhile, Air Serbia, the national airline of Serbia, announced plans to expand its widebody fleet by acquiring two additional Airbus A330 aircraft. Serbia’s Finance Minister, Siniša Mali, said during an interview that the airline aims to initiate flights to Shanghai and Guangzhou by May 2024.The US and China had the most and second-most extensive domestic markets in capacity, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK) in December 2019, respectively, with a global share of 14% and 9.8%, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and before flight limits were imposed between the two countries, the United States and China had over 340 flights per week. Nearly 150 of these flights were round-trip flights. The lack of flights currently offered has caused ticket prices for these services to remain extremely high when compared to pre-pandemic pricing. However, the several recent increases in this limit show a trend that indicates both parties are eager to expand flight operations.
