On February 23, the Sanya's Dadonghai Scenic Area's police received a report from the public, claiming that a foreigner was indiscriminately attacking people at the beach. Some said that he even climbed up to the lifeguards' post and attacked them.The seemingly drunk foreign national, as one witness described him, was captured on numerous videos taken by people who were at the beach during the incident.Short videos shared on social media showed the man arguing with a lifeguard at the tower, and then trying to hit him, but a person standing beside him restricted him and then the man walked down the tower's stairs.There is no much credible information provided by bystanders as to how and why he climbed up the lifeguard tower, nor why he tried to hit the lifeguard.However, captions on the videos shared on social media mentioned that he insulted and also tried to hit the lifeguard with a bench, and lifeguards at the tower responded by protecting themselves from the attack by hiding behind benches.A Scuffle with the PoliceWhen the police arrived at the scene to handle the case, he was already surrounded by a crowd of angry beachgoers, some holding empty beer bottles.The police tried to calm the foreign national down, but he grew more aggressive and attacked them, according to witnesses. After numerous failed attempts to dissuade him from further confrotation, and to protect him from angry beachgoers, they had to use force and arrest him.The police handcuffed the foreign national and took him to the police station for further questioning (they were forced to do so to protect him from the angry crowd). At the station, the lifeguard told the police that he would not press any charges.Nevertheless, netizens called for a heavy punishment to be imposed on the foreign national involved, on the basis of what they saw on the short videos shared on social media.The local police told reporters that since the lifeguard opted not to press any charges, the foreign national would not face any charges or punishment.
