拾萬北京 | 即将展出 | 王希民:湍濑激人
拾萬空间(北京)将于2023年12月30日呈现艺术家王希民的个展《湍濑激人》。湍濑意为水浅流急处,当个人身处激流之中,往往会为之裹挟、随之翻覆,即便心存不甘与改变,但大多也只能随波逐流、载浮载沉,正是面对这种境遇的无力感,以及因无力而造成的愤怒促成了王希民的创作动机。
Hunsand Space(Beijing)is delighted to present the solo exhibition "Riveting Rapids" by the artist Wang Ximin on December 30, 2023. "湍濑" refers to a place where the water is shallow and the flow is rapid. When individuals find themselves in turbulent currents, they are often carried along, overturned. Even if one harbors reluctance and a desire for change, most can only go with the flow, rising and falling with the current. It is precisely the sense of powerlessness in the face of such circumstances, along with the anger resulting from this helplessness, that motivates Wang Ximin's artistic creation.

山西省右玉县,王希民的故乡,自古便是北方游牧民族南下的要冲,使得历代中原王朝不断在此筑城、建堡,与之分疆对垒。加之以往这里恶劣的自然条件,在战争频发与生存抗争之下,留下了众多古堡、古长城和古镇,虽然时代变迁已经改变了这里的人文和自然风貌,但古老的法则和风俗依然在这里潜行,一如杀虎口、右卫镇、威远堡这些地名所见证的亘古的苍莽与肃杀。
王希民自幼便成长在这历史与现代交汇的湍流中,以致儿时的视觉记忆会不时闪现在如今的创作里,加之壁画系的科班训练赋予了他笼罩全景的视角,于是过去和现在、地上与地下全部熔炼在一起,画中的世界仿佛也因此重归混沌的孕育性时刻,于是时间重叠进而隐退,空间与地域并置并混乱地挪移,最终留下无尽的斑驳、纠缠和复杂。
但王希民并没有掉入壁画图像中旁观式的图解、叙事和说教逻辑,反而以画面中的形象作为个人情绪表达的载体,以此来回应当下具体、真实的生存境遇。所以深处迷局之中,艺术家无法将自己视为置身事外的第三者,并以此来俯视所谓的众生,因而他的作品从未有“人”的出现,而是以走兽飞禽、植被草木来负荷生命,将人拉至与其同等的初始维度中——一种在烈火、尘烟和荆棘中的无助、无奈以及挣脱和挣扎。
王希民,1992年生于山西省右玉县。2015年本科毕业于中央美术学院壁画系,2019年硕士毕业于中央美术学院壁画系。现任教于中央美术学院壁画系。

Youyu County, Shanxi Province, Wang Ximin's hometown, has historically been a strategic location where northern nomadic tribes clash with the central plains, leading to the construction of numerous castles and fortresses by successive dynasties, marking the border and confrontation. Coupled with the harsh natural conditions of the past, amid frequent wars and struggles for survival, many ancient castles, sections of the Great Wall, and ancient towns have been left behind. Although the changes of the times have altered the cultural and natural landscape, ancient rules and customs still linger, as witnessed by names such as "Kill Tiger Pass," "You Wei Town," and "Wei Yuan Fortress"—testimonies to the timeless vastness and solemnity.
Growing up in the turbulent confluence of history and modernity, Wang Ximin's childhood visual memories occasionally flash in his current creations. Coupled with the formal training in mural art, which endows him with a panoramic perspective, the past and the present, the surface and the underground, merge together. The world within the paintings seems to return to the chaotic moments of gestation, causing time to overlap and eventually recede. Spaces and regions juxtapose and shift chaotically, leaving behind endless mottling, entanglement, and complexity.
However, Wang Ximin does not fall into the interpretative, narrative, and didactic logic of mural image observation. Instead, he uses the images in the paintings as a vehicle for personal emotional expression, responding to the specific and real circumstances of contemporary existence. Deep within the labyrinth, the artist cannot view himself as a detached third party, looking down on the so-called sentient beings. Consequently, his works never depict the presence of "humans" but use animals, birds, and vegetation to bear the burden of life, pulling people into an initial dimension on equal footing—a state of helplessness, inevitability, and the struggle to break free, all within the raging fires, dust, and thorns.
Wang Ximin, born in 1992 in Youyu County, Shanxi Province, graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2015 and completed his Master's degree in the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2019. He is currently teaching in the Mural Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

拾萬空间,于2014年成立于北京草场地艺术区,2018年迁址到北京798艺术区。2021年底开设石家庄分馆拾萬当代艺术中心,并于2023年底迁至石家庄市井陉县北障城村。2023年初在杭州市西湖区转塘街道的孵鸡湾建立分部。拾萬北京总部位于798包豪斯建筑集群中的一处二楼下陷式空间,石家庄分部深入到太行山古村落中的一座老教堂,而杭州空间则改造自龙坞茶山旁的一间农舍。拾萬空间对常规化的展览保持警惕,希望从当代艺术的语境出发,通过持续的展览和项目,来回应我们共同的生存境遇,激发出当下文化中被忽视的部分。
Hunsand Space was established in 2014 in the Caochangdi Art Zone of Beijing. In 2018, it relocated to the 798 Art District in Beijing. At the end of 2021, Hunsand Space opened a branch, Hunsand Center for Contemporary Art, in Shijiazhuang, and by the end of 2023, it had moved to Beizhangcheng Village in Jingxing, Shijiazhuang. In early 2023, a new branch was established in Fujiwan, Zhuantang, Xihu, Hangzhou. The Beijing headquarters of Hunsand Space is located within a sunken two-story building in the Bauhaus architectural complex within the 798 Art District. The Shijiazhuang branch delves deep into an old church within a historic village in the Taihang Mountains, while the Hangzhou space has been transformed from a farmhouse near the Longwu Tea Plantation. Hunsand Space remains vigilant against the standardization of exhibitions and aims to respond to our shared existential experiences, sparking the often overlooked aspects of contemporary culture through ongoing exhibitions and projects.
