Activities galore on tourism day

Roses are in full bloom at the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden.





From coffee festivals and music concerts to exhibitions and intangible cultural heritage experiences, a slew of activities will be staged across Shanghai to celebrate the annual China Tourism Day that falls on May 19.


There will be something to cater to every interest, whether your passion be for coffee, music, outdoor sports, or traditional tourist attractions.


The activities cover 10 sectors including ecological tourism in Shanghai's rural areas, architecture, cruise, fashion and night tour, culture and art, intangible cultural heritage, and ancient towns, according to the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism.


Arts and performances

At Xujiahuiyuan, a 4A tourist attraction, Xujiahui Park and Hengshan-Fuxing Roads (Hengfu) Historical Conservation Zone, exhibitions, pop-up music concerts, guided tours of museums, lectures and walking tours will be held on May 18.


A special exhibition, "General Star Atlas of the Southern and Northern Hemisphere Separated by the Equator," is ongoing at Zikawei Library, offering a glimpse into the largest Eastern royal star atlas and also the earliest existing example.


It is a stunning landmark historical work under the survey and drawing of Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), a scholar and politician during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).


Xujiahuiyuan is known as the "origin of haipai (Shanghai-style) culture."


The "General Star Atlas of the Southern and Northern Hemisphere Separated by the Equator" exhibition is open at the Zikawei Library.





On May 20, a concert will be held at Xujiahui Park, while Pingtan (storytelling to music) performances will be staged at the Xuhui District Culture Center between May 18 and 30 to promote traditional Chinese culture.


The Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts will host a dough modeling activity on May 18.


At the former residence of cartoonist Zhang Leping (1910-1992), an event for people to appreciate his work will be held on May 20.


A haipai ballet drama will be staged at The INLET on the same day, while a food art festival will be held at the Grand Theater, merging performances, bazaars, exhibitions and workshops, between May 20 and June 23.


The Bund Art Season is underway at the Yuyuan Garden scenic area, involving a public art exhibition, art activities and art shops.


Coffee and tour

The Changning Coffee Culture Festival will run from May 19 to 21 to boost offline consumption.


City walk tours that allow people to explore the masterpieces and legacies of legendary architect Laszlo Hudec in Shanghai, and villas where celebrities once dwelled, will run through the end of May.


A coffee-plus-cruise tour will be available on boats sailing on Suzhou Creek, allowing passengers to enjoy a pleasant cruise tour surrounded by the aroma of coffee.


A sea of flowers

At the Shanghai Botanical Garden, the annual Shanghai (International) Flower Exhibition is ongoing, with flowers in full bloom bursting into a kaleidoscope of colors. There are nearly 30 floral landscapes by 40 horticulture units from home and abroad in the exhibition.


Shanghai Gongqing Forest Park presents a dreamlike iris scenery with nearly 50 varieties of iris in full bloom.

The 2023 Shanghai Rose Exhibition at the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden features more than 1,000 varieties of roses, presenting a sea of flowers that covers 40,000 square meters, while a lavender festival is being held at Zhangma Scenic Area in Qingpu District.


A walking activity will be held in the Meilan Lake area of Baoshan District on May 20, with the route stringing together a number of cultural and tourist landmarks and greenways.


On May 19-20, a vintage car parade at Jiabei Country Park will allow people to experience a ride in an antique car and to experience the charm of auto culture.


Camping and sports

Camping season has started in rural villages of Jinshan District, featuring cycling, barbecue, flower appreciation and film watching events for campers.


On May 28, a thrilling cycling event on Chongming Island is a must for cyclists, promising picturesque views alongside the 100-kilometer routes.


A camping carnival will be hosted at Shanghai Lavender Park on May 20, inviting people, particularly lovebirds, to enjoy the fun of outdoor sports and complete a journey of love as the day, May 20, sounds similar to "I love you" in Chinese.


At Jinshan City Beach scenic area, equestrian riding and carriage tours will enable people to enjoy the fun of horse rides.


Traditional culture

The Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park is the ideal place to experience the charm of guochao (Chinese-chic) with an ancient-style bazaar, hanfu (traditional Han-style clothes) parade, and guochao performances ongoing.


At the Confucian Temple in Jiading District, a cultural bazaar featuring traditional delicacies and intangible cultural heritage items of the district will be staged on May 20 and 21, and a fishing culture festival is ongoing at Jinshanzui Fishing Village, the city's last remaining fishing village.
