Shanghai Grand Theater's grand plans for 25th anniversary
The Shanghai Grand Theater is gearing up to celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 27 with a variety of exciting performances and exhibitions.
The landmark cultural venue opened in 1998 in downtown People's Square.
The mural painting "The Goddess of Art" will be reproduced and placed in the Grand Theater's entrance hall.
Meaningful exhibits
Chinese-American painter Ding Shaoguang created the painting "The Goddess of Art" for the opening of the theater in 1998. The theater is creating a replica of the 6.4m x 4.4m mural painting, which will be placed in the entrance hall. The original work will be kept in the theater's collection hall.
Meanwhile, the theater's history and memorable moments are displayed in an exhibition on its second floor, which is open to the public.
Impressive performances
The Shanghai Grand Theater's program list for June and July covers dance, drama, concerts and traditional opera. One highlight is the "2023 Summer Season" featuring Chinese adaptations of classic dramas as well as awesome original works.
The Chinese adaptation of American playwright Arthur Miller's "The Price" will make its Shanghai debut on June 20-23. The Chinese adaptation of "Preliminary Proof," a theatrical production from London's West End created by Suzie Miller, will be presented from July 27 to August 6.
The National Ballet of China's "Dream of the Red Chamber" will be performed for Shanghai audiences for the first time from June 30 through July 1. The classic ballet "The Little Mermaid" will also be performed from July 4 to 5.
Audiences can also expect to be enchanted by traditional performances, such as Kunqu Opera "Six Stories of Floating Life" produced by Shanghai Grand Theater, which showcases Oriental aesthetics.
A recital by trumpet player Guo Xiang has been scheduled on June 30. The Shanghai Philharmonic Symphony's closing concert of the season will be held on July 16, featuring Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 (1890 edition).
