Org. Setting and Reporting


This post is located in the United Nations Security and Safety Service (UNSSS), Division for Management (DM) of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The Intern reports to the Chief, UNSSS through the Deputy Chief. The position supports the work of the Security and Safety Service.

The internship is for four (4) months (with the possibility of an extension up to a maximum of 6 months subject to the needs of the office and availability of the intern) with a desired starting date in July 2021.

The position will be UNPAID and full-time, i.e five days (40 hours per week) under the Supervision of the Deputy Chief of UNSSS. For information on the work of UNOV kindly visit www.unov.org

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely or carry out the entire internship from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home/residence country and the internship duty station as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.

Responsibilities


Within assigned authority, the Intern will be responsible for the following duties:

- Provides basic technical support on relevant security hardware and software systems applications in assigned area;

- Assists and supports senior staff in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and maintenance of customized security application software systems;

- Assists in the preparation of the technical and user documentation, as well as in the production of training materials.

- Conducts research on new technologies as requested; keeps abreast of developments in the field; assists in testing and evaluating new products and technologies;

- Performs other related duties as required.

Education


To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

For this particular position applicants should be at least in the final year of a first-level university degree with main subjects as Information Technology related studies or have graduated with a university degree with main subjects as Information Technology related studies.

- Be computer literate in standard software applications;

- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience


Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.

Languages


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second United Nations language and working knowledge of German is desirable.
