catch 是抓住，sun 是太阳，但是 catch the sun 可不是“抓住太阳”！那它究竟是什么意思，快来看看吉米老师是怎么说的。

catch the sun 不是表示抓住太阳，也不是夸父追日，catch the sun 其实是想表达太阳把你的皮肤晒成略深的棕色或红色，皮肤被太阳晒黑了。

We spent the whole day at the beach so we all caught the sun.

我们花了一整天的时间在沙滩上，所以我们都被晒黑了。

You’ve caught the sun on the back of your neck.

你脖子后面被晒红了。

catch a few rays

像这样 catch 来表示晒太阳的，还有 catch a few rays 这个短语，rays 有射线的意思，抓住光线，吸收紫外线。于是 catch a few rays 是晒太阳，日光浴的意思。

I'm going to the beach to catch some rays. [=to sunbathe]

我要去海滨日光浴。 

catch 的相关短语

catch the bus

同样 catch 还可以表示赶上的意思，常见的便是 catch the bus 意为抓住公交车，也就是赶上了这趟车。

I have to hurry, I say. I have to catch the bus!

“我在赶时间。我必须赶上公交车！”

After I eat breakfast I'll walk to the bus stop and I'll catch the bus to work.

我吃完早餐后，会步行去公交车站，然后做公交去上班。

➤那没有赶上车，错过车了可以说 miss the bus，这里的miss the bus 有时候不仅表示错过汽车，还用来表示坐失良机，事业上的失败，于是catch and miss the bus 表示事业上的成败。

catch the light

catch the light 除了表示捕捉光线的本意外，它还侧重表示光的折射，比如当光照在某物上面，会发出闪闪的亮光。

His gold rings catch the light as he waves.

当他挥手时，他的金戒指会反射光线。

➤catch/capture lightning in a bottle 侥幸获胜（或成功）

➤那么在此基础上还有一个短语 catch/capture lightning in a bottle 在黑暗的瓶子里捕捉到一束光，可见是多么的幸运，于是这个词语就用来表示侥幸获胜/成功的意思。

He caught lightning in a bottle with the success of his very first book.

他很走运，处女作就取得了成功。

catch your breath

catch one's breath 是表示由于恐惧，震惊等屏息，屏气，或者是跑步或激烈运动后的喘口气，恢复正常呼吸。

I had to sit down and catch my breath. 

我只好坐下喘口气。

Don’t try to talk, just sit down and catch your breath. 

不要说话，坐下来喘口气。

catch someone dead

catch (someone) dead 用来表达内心极其不愿做某事，（由于尴尬）死也不肯做某事的意思，也可以说 see (someone) dead：
I wouldn't be caught/seen dead wearing that hideous outfit.我死也不会穿那难看的套装。
She won't be caught dead going to the movies with her obnoxious brother.她死也不肯和她那个招人讨厌的哥哥一起去看电影。

sun

make hay while the sun shines

hay是干草的意思，这个谚语是想说趁有太阳时晒干草，也就是利用好机会、好条件；抓紧时机；打铁趁热。
We should make hay while the sun shines and finish writing the book at a stretch. 我们应该趁热打铁，一口气把此书写完。

a place in the sun

这个短语不是真的表达一个有阳光的位置，而是表示一种舒适的状态；有利地位；优越境况。
He has been struggling to achieve a place in the sun these years. 这些年来，他一直在为改善境遇而拼搏。

under the sun

在太阳底下，用来强调事物数量很大，天下，世上，全世界。
We talked about everything under the sun.天南地北，我们无所不谈。
