2016-10-22 ThatsBJ城市漫步

There are some people who seem to meticulously plan their Halloween costumes all year long… and then there are the rest of us. If you’re anything like us here at That’s Beijing, you probably still have no idea what you're going to wear on the big night. And that's OK. Finding a costume isn't all that difficult in a city like Beijing.

Curious about where to shop for a Halloween costume in Beijing? Here’s a little guide on where you can find Halloween costumes and accessories in the capital:

Markets

Beijing is full of markets. But, just in case you need a little help in this department, here are a few solid options for all your costume-hunting needs.

1. Muxiyuan Fabric Market

If you’re feeling a little creative or if you're a DYI type, Muxiyuan Fabric Market is a great place to go hunt down various fabrics to create a pretty stellar costume. You can pretty much find it all here, from silk to cashmere to fur. This market is paradise for those who have the desire (and talent) to create their own costumes.

2. Xidan Minority World Market

On a budget? Xidan Minority World Market is a great place to find some cheap threads. And if you’re looking to put some finishing touches on your costume there should also be a decent selection of wigs and makeup available.

Daily 9am-7pm. North of the grassy hub of Xidan Square (between 77th Shopping Street Plaza and Xidan Shopping Center)

3. Silk Market

If you’re interested in donning a sexy silk outfit or a qipiao, then the Silk Market is a no-brainer. All you ladies (and men) can undoubtedly pick up some sort sexy silk attire at this market.

4. Taobao.com

Duh, Taobao has tons of costume options. Basically you can use Taobao for everything and anything you could ever need for the rest of your life, and that includes Halloween. Plus, you don’t have to trek all over town to do your Halloween shopping, which is always a plus.

5. Beta Costume Rentals

No time to put a costume together? Rent one from Beta Costume Rentals. This place has an astonishingly wide range of costumes. Seriously, just have a look. You'll find everything from samurai garb to mariachi outfits.

6. Huan Run Costume Rentals

Try Huan Run in Shunyi for both foreign and traditional garb. However, it’s probably best to have an idea in mind before you start perusing – the selection is so vast, it's almost overwhelming. Prices ranges from roughly RMB50-100. Not too bad, if you ask us.

7. Dong Fang Mei Costume Rental

If you’re looking to rent a costume, you’re bound to find something on this site. They have everything from ball gowns to grim reaper costumes to clown outfits (seems appropriate given the world's newfound obsession with dressing like freaky clowns). Rentals go from anywhere between RMB80-150 per day.

8. Shang Pin Yi Ran Clothing Rental

This rental place is another great bet. They have a wide selection of costumes. You can pretty much be whatever you want, from a belly dancer to a Disney character to a creepy animal (just in case you’re into the whole furry thing).

Vintage Shops

Vintage shops are always a good bet when shopping for Halloween costumes. Luckily tons of vintage shops have popped up in Gulou as of late, so we advise you to walk around town and pop into a few. Who knows what you might come across.

9. Miss Eliza Vintage

If you're down to splurge, this Gulou-based shop is a good bet for dresses and other vintage attire. The clothes in this shop are mostly priced from a few hundred to a few thousand yuan, depending on the designer, the item’s scarcity and the year it was produced. But there’s bound to be a great selection of Halloween-appropriate dresses, hats and accessories to choose from.

10. Supermarkets & Convenience Stores

If you’re feeling ultra lazy (and cheap) about the whole Halloween costume thing but still want to dress up, peruse one of Beijing’s many supermarkets and convenience stores. We’ve personally spotted costumes in Olé (in Ginza Mall). And in the recent past, our Editor-in-Chief, Oscar Holland may or may not have dressed up in witch costume (complete with hideous plastic nose), which he purchased at one of the city’s 7-11 stores. It can't hurt to take a look!

Good luck and happy shopping! Also, stay tuned for our upcoming guide on what to do in Beijing on Halloween... because there's a lot going on.
