CGTN CGTN 2020-08-24

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has published an article titled "China is the Real Sick Man of Asia," describing China's initial response to the epidemic as "less than impressive."

On Thursday, an article published on the APAC News website hit back at the claims made in the Wall Street Journal. Its author, editor-in-chief Marcus Reubenstein asked: "Have western reports on the coronavirus crisis pulled aside a mask that reveals an ugly racism?"

CGTN talked to Reubenstein about the reasons that prompted him to hit back. “What prompt me I guess was the nature of the headline…This surely can not be a headline on the Wall Street Journal…Definitely it's an attack on China, its government and its economy. The headline is outrageous," he said.

"We take offense to the article 'China Is the Real Sick Man of Asia' written by Walter Russell Mead and published on WSJ on Feb 3, 2020. Regardless of the author's view on China's problems, the title alone stokes racism against the Chinese people. That such a racially discriminatory title was allowed on WSJ indicates arrogance and poor judgment in WSJ's editing choices. Such reckless comments against innocent Chinese citizens will only encourage racism and incur repercussions against Chinese or other Asian ethnicities. Our demands include a proper apology from WSJ to the Chinese community and either a retraction of the article or a rectification of the title. Racism cannot be tolerated."

Hua Chunying: Walter Russell Mead, you should be ashamed of your words, your arrogance, your prejudice and your ignorance.

Geng Shuang:We have lodged stern representations with the WSJ.

The WSJ article belittled our efforts to fight against the epidemic. Its editor also headlined the article with a racially discriminatory and sensational title out of no respect for facts and professional ethics. It hurts the feelings of the Chinese people and roused public anger and condemnation.

China asks the WSJ to face squarely the severity of its mistake, make a public apology, and hold the persons involved accountable. However, what the WSJ has been doing since then is nothing but paltering.

China urges WSJ to take our concerns seriously and make a response. We reserve the right to take further measures.

(“This is the time for solidarity, not stigma”)
