CGTN CGTN 2020-08-24

Schools in China are now exploring online education options amid the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak.

After the Ministry of Education announced in late January the postponement of the 2020 spring semester, this week, many schools started online courses for students to study at home.

The online courses attained great attention among net users, as well as students and teachers. Relevant topics about online courses were also on the top search list of Weibo.

For many teachers, having an online course might have been a great challenge as they were unfamiliar with livestreaming and relevant platforms. But now, they are required to learn how to live stream courses through their mobile phones and properly interact with students.

However, online courses have prompted questions and doubts as some teachers and students found it difficult to adapt to the change.

Many teachers thought online course has its weaknesses compared to face-to-face teaching. For example, teachers can give students immediate feedback during traditional teaching, while online courses reduce the opportunities for interaction between students and teachers. Students may also be more easily distracted when having an online course.

Parents worried that children’s eyesight would be affected if they use electronic devices for a long time.

Besides, live streaming platforms also faced challenges and problems as they were unable to handle a large number of users at the same time. For example, Seewo, Guangdong-based education data platform, apologized for its temporary crash on Monday as it failed to offer stable services after many students logged in.

The Ministry of Education on Tuesday responded to questions and concerns over online classes on its website.

Some teachers are holding real-time online classes while others are using video lessons recorded in advance. Some others are using both methods. But in some regions, recording video classes is mandatory for all teachers. The ministry said there is no need for all teachers to record their own video classes for students in advance since it will increase the teachers' burden and is a waste of resources.

According to the ministry, no online classes should be provided to kindergarten students, and primary students in lower grade levels can decide whether to take the classes or not. For students in higher grade levels, schools should limit the time and amount of online learning.

Furthermore, the ministry said schools should not ask students to attend online classes every day, urging them to ensure students have adequate rest and also focus on physical fitness.
