CGTN CGTN 2020-08-25

An image taken at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University on Thursday afternoon has gone viral on Chinese social media and touched the hearts of many.

In the picture, a young respiratory therapist, who arrived in Wuhan in early February, is seen beside his COVID-19 patient, 87-year-old Mr. Wang, who hadn't been outdoors for a month, watching the sunset on their way back to the ward after a CT scan.

Dr. Liu Kai, from Shanghai, is among the tens of thousands of medics rushed from across the country to Wuhan to join the central Chinese city in the fight against COVID-19.

During an exclusive interview with CGTN, Liu said that although he didn't expect the picture would touch so many people on the internet, he found it a memorable moment.

A respected violinist, Mr. Wang has been in a severe condition and confined in hospital for a long time. Now officials say he's out of danger.

"We'll keep fighting the coronavirus side by side and embrace victory as soon as possible," said Liu.

The photo was taken by Gan Junchao, a 21-year-old volunteer.

He recorded the moment by coincidence when the doctor and patient were looking at the sunset together and making wishes.

Gan said his school has not started yet, so he chose to join the hospital as a nursing assistant working more than eight hours per day, according to media reports.

Now, more young volunteers like him can be seen in the city of Wuhan, especially as the number of recovered patients surpassed that of confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.

According to the new regulation released by local authorities, discharged patients will be transferred to designated medical centers for another 14 days.

Yu Liang, a 24-year-old local interior designer, joined the volunteer team to help in the allocation of patients.

"I was born here [in Wuhan] and just wanted the city to rejuvenate," said Yu. "I'd like to make my own efforts, too."

Shanghai's Fudan University also recruited volunteers recently for the battle against the novel coronavirus, mainly providing online tutoring for children whose parents are medical staff on the front lines.

The senior year student Yang Zexuan, who is among them, said she felt ashamed at first as she could barely do anything to help since the coronavirus outbreak. Now she valued the opportunity to be one of the participants, rather than an onlooker.

Although staying at home as an online tutor, Yang took her place on a battlefield, too. And she believed those medical workers may worry less when there's someone helping their children with homework and study.

Yang said the post-90s generation was young and had been protected, but have now picked up the baton to help others.

Zhang Yipu, 27, has recently taken up a new role – designated driver for medical workers in Xi'an, the provincial capital of Shaanxi Province. She previously worked on a national project on developing the country's western regions.

Zhang and other volunteers went through online training and assessment, covering areas such as introduction to the outbreak, self-protection from infection, psychological assistance and emergency response.

After qualifying for the role, she started working as a chauffeur in her spare time for doctors and nurses who need to commute between an affiliated hospital and Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Zhang is one of 30 volunteers who began their duties as drivers in late February. Within just two weeks, they've made more than 300 trips that have benefited nearly 500 medical workers.
