CGTN CGTN 2020-08-24
The U.S. has established more than 200 biological laboratories around the world. Many of them are in countries close to Russia or China. According to a 2011 report by the Center for Strategic & International Studies, these military labs around the world have been conducting research on a wide range of infectious diseases and epidemics.

Yet we know very little about the processes and their purposes. But what does the U.S. need all these labs for? Why are these facilities researching deadly biological technologies? Is it simply because they are looking for cures?

In Fort Detrick, Maryland, the U.S. Army has cutting-edge laboratory facilities researching viruses. But the lab was temporarily shut down in August 2019. What really happened? The authorities did not give specific details.

But while the lab was closing, Maryland reported a number of pneumonia cases, or an illness sharing similarities with pneumonia. Later, they were announced as e-cigarettes-related symptoms by the authorities, even though people had doubts about the diagnosis. In 1951, a microbiologist who worked at the lab died of a rare contagious disease. In 1975, the army admitted that the man actually died of anthrax from the lab. They had falsified his death certificate.

In 2008, Bruce Ivins, a top U.S. biodefense scientist committed suicide after the Department of Justice investigated him. He had worked at Ft. Detrick labs for 18 years on anthrax. In 2015, residents of Ft. Detrick expressed deep concerns over the safety of the labs, but the government refused to share information.

Nancy Kingsbury, then managing director for Applied Research at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, testified at the House of Representatives in 2014. She admitted that in June and July that year there were two serious incidents of virus mishandling in two different labs run by the CDC and the NIH.

Some American politicians have accused China of lying about the COVID-19 outbreak.

But in February China facilitated and cooperated with a WHO team of experts to conduct an onsite investigation in Wuhan.

Biosafety incidents happen in the U.S. from time to time, how do we know that it won't happen again? Will the U.S. allow the WHO to send experts to probe army labs? We deserve an answer.
