CGTN CGTN 2020-11-21

The U.S. is leading the world in COVID-19 infections and deaths, totaling nearly 1.6 million and 95,000 respectively.

Staff members in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the White House has been driven by politics rather than science in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a CNN report revealed on Wednesday.

In interviews with CNN, CDC officials said the agency's efforts to address the global outbreak "have been hamstrung by a White House whose decisions are driven by politics rather than science," the report said.

A senior CDC official also criticized the Trump administration for focusing on China instead of Europe in early March, allowing large numbers of European travelers to enter the United States when transmissions in Europe were mounting.

"We've been muzzled," said a current CDC official. "What's tough is that if we would have acted earlier on what we knew and recommended, we would have saved lives and money."

Although the CDC alerted the White House of the rapid spread of the coronavirus on March 2, Trump did not announce strict travel restrictions on more than two dozen European countries until March 11.

"The White House was extremely focused on China and not wanting to anger Europe ... even though that's where most of our cases were originally coming from," said a CDC official.

Several U.S. states, including Virginia, Texas, and Vermont, have been manipulating COVID-19 data for economic reopening, according to local media. It is reported that health officials in these states have been combining the results of viral tests and antibody tests, which, as health experts pointed out, makes testing goals look impressive but doesn’t provide a true picture of how the virus is spreading.

Besides, the Department of Public Health in Georgia published a graph that showed a downward trend in new COVID-19 cases. But the data was not arranged in chronological order but in descending order. Worse still, a scientist in Florida, who developed the state’s coronavirus dashboards and maps, was fired after she refused to manipulate data.

On May 16, medical journal The Lancet published an editorial titled “Reviving the U.S. CDC,” criticizing Trump’s administration for reducing the CDC’s role in the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Trump administration’s further erosion of the CDC will harm global cooperation in science and public health, as it is trying to do by defunding WHO,” the article said.

“A strong CDC is needed to respond to public health threats, both domestic and international, and to help prevent the next inevitable pandemic. Americans must put a president in the White House come January, 2021, who will understand that public health should not be guided by partisan politics.”

In the entertainment industry, some big names including Julia Roberts and Penelope Cruz have teamed up with Dr. Fauci in a campaign called “Pass the Mic.” Their social media accounts will be run temporarily by frontline health workers and experts so that their voices can be heard.
