CGTN CGTN 2021-06-24

Syria's civil war is now in its 10th year, and for some local children, their childhood has been overshadowed by conflicts and killing. Some of them were born as refugees or internally displaced persons.

In Syria's northern Aleppo, a small park that survived years of conflict gives local children a chance to play. Even though it's shabby and rubble-surrounded, the park brings back joy that the children lost during the war...

Fares Zakkour, was a cute 10-year-old boy, he told CCTV's journalist, "There are no other places to have fun except this park. We play here every day. We only have swings and slides here. There are benches to rest on."

Shadi Ahamed, aged 10 years, told CCTV's journalist, "I meet my friends in the park and play with them every day. We play football and we come here almost every day."

The park is in western Aleppo. It is a favorite place for local children to play in. Behind these smiles is childhood trauma.

Around 4 years ago, the northern Syrian city of Aleppo was in the grip of a brutal war. This small park was luckily saved amid fierce fighting. Now it's the only public playground for children in this neighborhood.

The children call it the "park among the rubble".

Zeinab Hamui said, "We didn't go to the park during the war, because there were bombs and we were afraid to go out."

Jana Marzouk, aged 11, told CCTV's journalist in grief, "We didn't have water or electricity during the war. There were no places for us to play in. We didn't even go to school because of the mortar shellings.

I remember that one day a bomb fell near my uncle and he was killed."

The park may be small and shabby,

but the children are pleased to have such a place for fun.

"Now we can move freely because it's safer. We have the park now and we can play in it and go home safely." Zeinab said.

The UN says 4.8 million children were born in Syria since the conflict began nine years ago.

1 million children were born as refugees.

Nearly 10,000 children are dead or injured.

There are 2.5 million children displaced within Syria.

The crisis is far from over...
