A showdown looms in the U.S. capital as Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser plans weekend anti-racism protests while President Donald Trump continues to push for the policing of the city.

The mayor, who is African American, had a two-block long "Black Lives Matter" mural painted in massive yellow letters on the street leading to the White House. She also announced that the section of 16th street in front of the White House has been officially named "Black Lives Matter Plaza."

The area is where protesters were forcibly pushed away on Monday evening before Trump walked to St. John’s Church, in front of which he posed for photographs while holding a Bible.

According to  Bowser, the “BLACK LIVES MATTER” message is meant to “demonstrate that in America – you can peacefully assemble, you can bring grievances to your government, and you can demand change.”

The mayor wanted to make it "abundantly clear" the street belonged to the city, according to Bowser's chief of staff John Falcicchio, who wrote on Twitter: "There was a dispute this week about whose street this is. Mayor Bowser wanted to make it abundantly clear that this is DC’s street and to honor demonstrators who peacefully protested on Monday evening."

Bowser wrote an extensive letter to U.S. President Donald Trump requesting the withdrawal of federal law enforcement from the district.

The letter echoes Bowser's comments on Thursday where she said she wanted out-of-state military troops out of the nation's capital after they were called in to handle the protests over the death of George Floyd.

Trump Friday fiercely lashed out at Muriel Bowser, calling her "grossly incompetent" after she requested Trump to withdraw thousands of National Guard troops deployed to the nation's capital in wake of protests over the killing of George Floyd.

In a series of tweets, Trump said Bowser is "in no way qualified to be running an important city like Washington, D.C. If the great men and women of the National Guard didn't step forward, she would have looked no better than her counterpart Mayor in Minneapolis!"

Trump said Bowser "is now fighting with the National Guard, who saved her from great embarrassment..."

Minneapolis city has agreed to ban the use of chokeholds by police as a way of restraining suspects during arrest.

The law enforcers will also be required to intervene and report any incidences of unauthorized use of force by their colleagues.

U.S. District Court Judge in Colorado banned the Denver Police Department from using tear gas, pepper balls or projectiles of any kind against peaceful protesters, local media reported.

The ruling came a day after four Denver residents filed a lawsuit against the city claiming the city's police violated the protesters' constitutional rights during a recent protest.
