2020年2月，武汉病毒研究所研究员石正丽团队在学术期刊《自然》发表了一篇论文，研究结果称新冠病毒基因组序列与一种蝙蝠身上的冠状病毒在全基因组水平上相似度达到96%，同时这种蝙蝠病毒RaTG13基因组的同源性和新冠病毒达到96.2%，使它成为最接近新冠病毒的冠状病毒。
