I call on everybody, especially dog lovers, to save the Canidrome greyhounds racing dogs.

A campaign on behalf of hundreds of racing dogs facing an uncertain future with the impending closure of the Macau canidrome went global on last Friday, as track bosses received a formal list of potential adopters from around the world.

The mass bid to adopt all 650 greyhounds at the track follows a protest over the way officials were handling the closure. Activists have claimed some of the dogs had already been snapped up by unscrupulous middlemen seeking to profit from the value of their blood for transfusions. Greyhound blood can be highly valuable for transfusions because it has higher levels of red cells than that of other breeds. Some of them may be sold to Vietnam, where commercial dog racing is legal and is growing, and to China, India, and Pakistan, where illegal tracks are spreading. Some of them may even end up in the dog meat trade.

The plight of the dogs currently kennelled at Asia’s only dog track – who will effectively become homeless – has brought in offers to adopt from people, charities and rescue organizations in Hong Kong, Europe, and the United States, as well as Macau residents. The Canidrome, formerly a venue for live greyhound racing, will definitively cease to exist by 21st July 2018.

However, it was far from certain on Friday that the mass offering of sanctuary would work. According to animal rights campaigners, the government officials ultimately responsible for the animals’ fate were sticking to their earlier rejection of a plea to let Macau’s only animal rights group take over the kennels and look after the dogs.

But there are things we can do!!! Let’s put an end to this hell!

* To get the government of Macau to hand over the 650 greyhounds at the Canidrome into the care of ANIMA Macau.

* To find suitable homes for each of the 650 greyhounds.
