给大家推荐一套很特别的书:英语习惯用语,这么学好有趣!

花生君:这两天上海好热啊!所以今天的“周三书讯”时间,来和大家说点轻松好玩的。


大家知道,我这份工作的一大福利,就是每天有好多新奇古怪的书可以读。这段日子,每天下班前不知道该干啥的零碎时间,我都在翻学乐的这一套书   ...



这套书有好多本,是专门为孩子们编写的。套路都一样,用两页说一个英语俚语(Idioms)、谚语(Proverbs)、习惯用语(Phrases) ...  每天十来条,坚持了快一个月了,感觉自己英语变得比美国人还地道,呵呵 ~


说起“地道”,真是的俺们和英语打交道的童鞋们永远的“痛”。其实中国人说英语,麻烦真的不在于有口音,而是不熟悉也不会用英语惯用表达法,说出来的话,写出来的文字,可以用四个字概括:中式英语 - Chinglish!


比如,欧美人的头发很多是黄色,我们可能就会直译,说她是 yellow hair, 这就跟老外说我们的“包子”叫“裹着肉的面包”那么别扭,地道的说法应该是 blonde ... 



英语里有大量的俚语、谚语、习惯用语,平时真的是随处可以碰到。这套书也牛,把重点的习惯用语,全给孩子们总结出来了,非常实用。


不多说了,我从这套书里,随便选了4类32条非常有趣的“习惯语”,我敢说,不少用语,你会有一种“似曾相识”的感觉 ... 


Idioms


俚语就是那些你光看字面意思,不太能轻易猜出准确含义的英语固定表达法,相当于咱们的“俗语” ... 


1. the apple of someone's eye

  • 字面意思:别人眼里的苹果

  • 实际意思:一个人是另一个人“掌上明珠”或“珍爱之人”


The apple of someone's eye is the person they love most dearly.



2. get cold feet

字面意思:脚凉了

实际意思:因为过于紧张而“临阵逃脱”


If you get cold feet,you suddenly decide not to do what you were going to do, usually because you feel nervous or unsure about it.



3. it is all Greek to me

字面意思:感觉好希腊

实际意思:对此我一窍不通


You say it is all Greek to me when you cannot understand something. Either the words are unfamiliar or the subject is too complicated.



4. a white elephant 

字面意思:大白象

实际意思:一个成本很高但没啥用处或回报的项目


A white elephant is a project that may seem impressive or valuable, but is in fact not useful or profitable.



5. butterflies in the stomach

字面意思:胃里的蝴蝶

实际意思:心里特别紧张、不安


When you say that someone has butterflies in their stomach, you mean they are very nervous.You can also say, informally that someone has butterflies or gets butterflies, meaning that they feel nervous.



6. The world is your oyster

字面意思:世界是你的牡蛎

实际意思:世界对你敞开大门,机会满满


If you say that the world is your oyster, you mean that you are able to take advantage of all the opportunities available.



7. vote with your feet

字面意思:用脚投票

实际意思:当你不赞成或不满意时,走开就是拒绝


You vote with your feet when you express your dissatisfaction with something by walking away or otherwise rejecting it.




8. born with a silver spoon in your mouth

字面意思:生下来嘴里就含着银汤匙

实际意思:出生于富贵之家


You are born with a silver spoon in your mouth if you are born into a wealthy family.



Proverbs



谚语就是那些包含一个简单道理和建议的短语,相当于咱们的“格言” ... 


1. every dog has its day

字面意思:每只狗都有自己的一天

实际意思:每个人都有时来运转的一天


Every person, however humble or ordinary, will eventually get an opportunity to have power and influence or to be noticed.



2. money talks

字面意思:钱会说话

实际意思:有钱能使鬼推磨


People who have money can get what they want to make people do what they want.



3. don't put all your eggs in one basket

字面意思:不要把鸡蛋放到同一个篮子里

实际意思:要分散风险


It is safer to spread risk that to risk everything that you have on one single thing.



4. what goes around, comes around

字面意思:转了一圈又回来了

实际意思:因果相承,善有善报,恶有恶报


The things that you do will affect what happens to you. If you behave well and are good to people, they are likely to be good to you. If you treat people badly, you are likely to be badly treated in return.



5. when in Rome, do as the Romans do

字面意思:在罗马,跟罗马人一样做事儿

实际意思:入乡要随俗


When you are visiting a place,it is best to behave in the same way that the people who live there do.



6. the apple never falls far from the tree

字面意思:苹果总是掉在离树不远的地方

实际意思:孩子总是和父母有很多相似之处


Children are ususally like their parents - in look and in their characters.



7. no man is an island

字面意思:没有人是一座孤岛

实际意思:没有人可以在完全孤立地过快乐的生活


It is impossible to live a happy life without contact with other people.



8. don't wash your dirty linen in public

字面意思:不要公开洗你的脏衣服

实际意思:把自己的错误、问题全部暴露给每个人,是愚蠢的


It is a bad idea to reveal your errors or problems to everyone.




Phrases


英语里有大量习惯用语,也是光看字面意思不太理解它的真实含义的 ... 


1. a slip of the tongue

字面意思:舌头打了个滑

实际意思:说漏嘴了


You make a slip of the tongue when you accidentally say something that is not what you meants to say.



2. odds and ends

字面意思:奇怪的和结尾的

实际意思:又杂又碎的小玩意儿们


You use odds and ends to talk about small items of various kinds.



3. a false alarm

字面意思:错误的报警

实际意思:虚惊一场


If people think something bad has happened (or is going to happen) and they wrong, it is a false alarm



4. have a sweet tooth

字面意思:有一颗甜牙齿

实际意思:爱吃甜食


Someone who has a sweet tooth is very fond of food that contains a lot of sugar. You can use the phrase with a sweet tooth to describe such a person.



5. the lesser of two evils

字面意思:两个恶里少的那一个

实际意思:两害取其轻


When you have to choose between two unpleasant things, the lesser of two evils is the one that is slightly better than the other.



6. food for thought

字面意思:为了想问题吃的东西

实际意思:引发深思的东西


To give someone food for thought is to make them think carefully and seriously, as a result of something you have said or something that has happend.



7. the moment of truth

字面意思:真相时刻

实际意思:发现自己到底是成功还是失败的那一刻


The moment of truth is the moment when you find out if something is a success.



8. train of thought

字面意思:一火车的思路

实际意思:当你思考问题的时候,想到的一连串的相关点


Your train of thought is the series of connected things that go through your mind when you are thinking.




Borrowed Words & 

New Words


英语也有大量从其它语言里“借来”的外来词和“与时俱进”的新词,用得非常广发 ... 


1. Déjà Vu (day-zhah VOO)

似曾相识


Déjà Vu is used as a noun and its literal meaning is "already seen". Déjà Vu is used to describe a strange feeling that you have been to a place before or that something you are experiencing has happened to you before,although you know that this is not the case.



2. carte blanche (kart BLONSH)

给你自由,做你想做的


Carte blanche is used as a noun. Its literal meaning is "blank paper" (on which you can write anything that you want to). If you give someone carte blanche, you give them complete freedom to do what they want.



3. rendezvous (RON-day-voo)

在说好的时间、地点,我们来相会


Rendezvous is used both as a noun and as a verb.Its literal meaning is "present yourself". In modern English, a rendezvous is a meeting at an agreed time and place or the place where people have agreed to meet. To rendezvous is to meet at an agreed time and place.



4. circa ( SER-kuh)

学术英语用法,大约在什么年代


Circa is used as a preposition in scholarly English.Its meaning in English,as in Latin, is around in the sense of approximately. Circa is used especially with dates or periods of time. It is often used in the form of an abbreviation, either c. or ca.



5. hashtag (#)

打个标签吧


The hashtag refers to both th symbol # as well as words or phrases preceded by hashtags,as used on social media to identify message on a specific topic.



6. onesie

连体衣,上衣和裤子一体的宽松服饰


A onesie commonly refers a loose-fitting jumpsuit for adults.It is a single piece of clothing that cobines both a top and a pair of pants.



7. black swan 

黑天鹅,意想不到的重大事件


A black swan is something that happens unexpectedly with great impact.You could also describe something that is extremely rare to be a black swan.



8. sandwich generation

三明治,上有老、下有小的一代人


The sandwich generation is a generation of people who are reponsible for bringing up there children as well as caring for their aging parents.



不知道你熟悉这些说法么?这套学乐的书里有上千条,读下来,英语里主要的习惯用法,基本都会接触到。最主要的是,这种图说方式很轻松,能很快让孩子理解意思,而且能马上用到实际生活场景里。我感觉不光是孩子,我们自己读读,也有一种“恍然大悟”的感觉,好酷滴!



话说回来,其实中国人说 Chinglish!也很正常,不过能学会用合适的英语用法去表达,的确沟通效率要高很多。你会发现,几个词,一句短语,就把咱想要说的“千言万语”都传神地表达出来了,这跟咱们用“刻舟求剑”这样的成语去表达很复杂的哲理,有相似的地方。不过,必须说,古人的这些成语,意境要更美一些。相比之下,英语还是要“大白话”很多。
