Daniel Graff, Distinguished Researcher at Tongji University and Director of the Strategic Design Lab (SDL), examines the myths and misunderstandings surrounding AI in design. Speaking from the perspective of a design scientist, Daniel compares AI's rise to the internet boom of the 1990s, highlighting issues of sprawl and lack of cohesive integration.

Daniel explains that although AI accelerates data analysis and shortens development cycles, it’s more of a facilitator than a creative counterpart. This usage pattern confines its potential to improve efficiency rather than fostering creativity. He stresses the need for AI to be tuned to human collaborators, ensuring that perceived over-intelligence doesn't disrupt the process. Looking ahead, designers need to learn how to work alongside AI, developing a shared understanding and decoding AI's decision-making logic. It will enable a smooth fusion of AI capabilities and human creativity, setting the stage for mutual success.

Anxious About AI

Peng Peng

Wavemaker

Peng Peng, Head of Innovation at Wavemaker China, shares his three major anxieties about AI from the perspective of an everyday user, offering insights into the intersection of technology and humanity. He explored the purpose behind the "artificial" label: is it about superiority or cost-efficiency? Peng questioned whether AI can outperform or be more economical than the human brain. He cited the controversy over an AI-generated artwork winning an award and MIT's CS AI Lab's finding that AI can only replace human labour in 23% of cases, provoking thoughts on AI's true benefits and role.

Peng Peng also analysed the anthropomorphism of AI, highlighting the public's contradictory mindset of expecting AI to exhibit near-human intelligence while fearing the ethical and emotional challenges such intelligence might bring. Finally, he tackled the core of "AI anxiety" - the fear of being replaced.

Invoking Marxist theory, he discussed AI's position in productivity: is it merely an enhancing tool or a transformative agent of labour objects? Ultimately, he argued, it depends on humanity. Until AI develops self-awareness, humans remain irreplaceable with their unique decision-making abilities, sense of responsibility, innovative thinking, and curiosity.

In conclusion, AI is now closely unified with people's daily lives. In healthcare, AI assists doctors in earlier and more precise patient diagnoses. In tourism, AI recommends hotels, arranges flights and plans optimal itineraries. In education, AI automates grading, freeing up teachers' time for instruction. AI has reshaped people's relationships with their environment and transformed their work and lives.

However, we must investigate more thoroughly: how can we better embrace, apply, and harness AI? How can we leverage AI to augment the distinctive human expression and imagination, transforming "what we see is what we get" into "what we imagine is what we see"? In this transformation, we strive to uncover a better integration point between AI and the humanities.

As Linna Zhao, the director of "UNSEEN" and the Head of Thought Leadership at Wavemaker China, aptly expressed: "The Mountains WE Climb Together."

AI’s merely a means and a tool. No matter how technology evolves, it is ultimately "WE" who define the problems "WE" need to solve. It’s also "WE" who embark on the next journey and climb the next mountain.
