Don't miss world-class Chinese musicians playing at Sunday Salon
This month, Time Out is bringing an amazing pipa player and friends to The Bookworm
Ever been to our regular classical music event, Sunday Salon? Not to blow our own French horn or anything, but it's pretty awesome – whether you're a classical music buff or not.
Time Out Beijing's Sunday Salon takes you behind the scenes of China's classical music, featuring a different classical music luminary each month.
Hosted by Time Out's Stage editor of over a decade, Nancy Pellegrini, the salon is made up of discussions with, and performances from, the esteemed guest. Sunday Salon has had some of China's biggest names in classical music, and this month is no exception.
It takes place on a Sunday (duh) at The Bookworm. For us, the coolest part is seeing some of the world's most accomplished musicians playing pieces on the rickety old Bookworm piano. Not an experience you see every day!
Zhou Hui and friends
Chengdu native Zhou Hui began playing pipa at age six and made her public debut a year later. She won the Artist of Excellence gold medal in the International Pipa Instrument Competition and joined pianist Lang Lang in recording Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack to the German animated classic Laura’s Star (2004). In 2013 she earned a China Conservatory professorship with state-honoured status; the following year she authored a book about creative teaching methods for pipa.
This month, Zhou brings selected students from her Kaku-Instrumental Music School to play solo and ensemble pieces at The Bookworm.
