Shanghai's Underground Gems You Didn't Know Existed

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-29

We’ve all gazed in wonder at the spectacular skyscrapers and lights Shanghai has to offer. But it also boasts a very impressive underground full of treats and delights you’ve probably yet to discover.

SHENKENG HOTEL

65 FLOORS BELOW GROUND

Shenkeng Hotel is somewhat of an architectural miracle. It was originally built during Japan’s invasion as bunkers. It wasn’t until 2006 that they finally decided to turn the structure into something new. Unfortunately the hotel won’t open until 2017, when it’s expected to have a whopping 370 rooms, including an ‘underwater’ one.

CHENSHAN BOTANICAL GARDENS

4,300 METERS

Chenshan Botanical Gardens has been in the construction process for the past 50 years. In spite of its artificial transformation, it still bears an uncanny resemblance to the natural beauty you’d find anywhere else.

K11 ART MALL

UNDERGROUND LUXURY HAVEN

K11 Art Mall has always been renowned for its collection of designer boutiques and exquisite goods, and it’s recently opened a whole new B1 floor. It boasts magnificent Byzantine church-style architecture with stained glass windows and beautiful archways. Even if you don’t want to splash all your cash, it’s still very much worth going just to admire the stunning décor.

EXTRA TIME CAFE & LOUNGE

CAFE CINEMA IN AN AIR RAID SHELTER

Extra Time is not just your standard cafe, it’s also a 10-screen cinema. It’s all underground and designed to look like a converted air raid shelter. The renovations were only just completed in September, so check it out while it’s still nice and new!

TIME ALLEY

TUNNEL TO 1930'S SHANGHAI

If you want to know more about Shanghai’s history, get yourself down to Time Alley. It offers a fantasy time travel experience to Old Shanghai all the way back in the 1930s. Thanks to advanced multimedia technology, you’ll be completely immersed in the everyday life of an original Shanghai-dweller. You’ll be shocked to see how different the world was back then, as well as all the ways it has stayed the same.

NEW YORK FEDERAL RESERVE BANK VAULT

10 METRE SQUARE=RMB 10MILLION

Located right in the centre of Shanghai, this is one of the smallest underground areas yet, and it contains approximately RMB 10,000,000! Only a select number of people know the entrance code.

WUJIAOCHANG COMMERCIAL STREET

500 METERS OF UNDERGROUND SHOPPING

Some may say that 500m of this impressive street simply isn’t enough. It’s got Shanghai’s biggest underground shopping mall, even bigger than the Science & Technology Park and People’s Square malls combined! You can find everything you’d ever want here, from culture to fine dining to good old western imports.

XINGGANG INTERNATIONAL CENTRE

36 METERS UNDERGROUND

This centre is still under construction, but is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. It will be in the middle of the Bund and along with Lujiazui will form the core of Shanghai’s central business district. It’ll stretch 36m down into the ground, which is the equivalent of a 12-storey building!

Editors Correction

In this past Saturday's 'Best Places To Host A Celebration In Shanghai' article we incorrectly stated that bringing your own wine to Scarpetta was not allowed. It is allowed but they always appreciate you buying one bottle of their affordable selection as a courtesy.
