Five Extreme Summer Sports to End Your Summer
Summer is slowly coming to an end. Take one last weekend getaway and do something extreme with your friends. Don’t just go and sit on a beach for another forgetful day. Instead you can go do some of the “extreme” sports popular not far from Shanghai! Check out below:
White-Water Rafting
Shouxian Valley Rafting
Shouxian Valley Rafting is just outside of Jinhua City, a suburb of Yiwu. Yiwu isn’t the closest destination for us Shanghaiers, but definitely worth consideration for a weekend getaway. The river section is roughly 3km and will take you about one hour to raft. With two big falls (40 m and 70 m respectively), this river route is more for those whom are out for a bit more excitement than a casual bamboo raft on a calm river. Prepare yourself and get going.
Location: Wuyi Shouxian Valley Area, Shijingli Village, Wangzhai Town, Wuyi County, Jinhua City
Tel: 579 8778 3338
Price: RMB128
Opening hours: rafting available at 10:30, 13:30 and 15:30
How to Get There: Once in Yiwu, take a bus to Wuyi (buses run 07:00-17:00). In Wuyi, head to the nearby Keyun Xi stop where you'll find a transfer that goes to Shouxian Valley. If you don't want to go through the hassle of transferring buses, you can also get a taxi from Wuyi to Shouxian Valley for around 50 RMB.
Jet-skiing
Located at most of Shanghai’s surrounding beaches, like Jinshan City Beach, are a few different extreme sports. Along the long beaches of golden sand are Jet skis are available for rent by the half-hour / hour typically and can range from RMB 100 – 200
Jinshan Beach is open to public for the following entrance fees:
Mon-Fri: RMB 30; Sat-Sun: RMB 50.
Wake Boarding
While water-skiing is quite common at most beaches throughout all of China, and still an awesome extreme sport, wake boarding is one to keep your eyes peeled for. It may not be as common, but I have seen it at Jinshan before and done a few rounds. Whether it’s an established company or guying leasing his equipment for some spare cash, only god knows.
Wake boarding is the snowboarding equivalent of water-skiing and an absolute blast. Personally I find it to be a lot more maneuverable than skis, but hey that’s just my opinion, try both out for yourself. Typically, can rent the gear and be dragged behind a jet ski or speed boat for RMB 200 – RMB 300 per hour, but depends on where you find it. Good luck!
Water Skiing
For water-skiing you can find a more legit service at Shanghai Cable Park, inside 'Clear Water, Blue Sands' playground. Here you can rent equipment and get a ticket for the above price listings.
Address: No. 39, Hai'ou Rd, Gulf Tourism Zone, Fengxian District, Shanghai
Getting There: Public transportation: line 1 to Xinzhuang stop, then taxi to the playground.
Paragliding
If you’re not much of a water fan, there are other options. Hop on over to Hangzhou, a take a bus to the scenic Fuyang mountains for a chance to take to the sky. Professional and Olympic paragliders often use the Yong’anshan mountain as their practice base and you can too! Call to arrange your tickets or just show up and pay, but make sure the weather isn’t too foggy or rainy first.
