Huge Pudong Granary Turned into Art Space
A 48-meter tall granary, once was the largest in Asia, is about to be one of the hottest exhibition spaces in Shanghai.
The space now called The Silo of 80,000 Tons, has been completely transformed and will be opening to the public starting tomorrow until January 15th; where you can learn about the transformation of the granary and enjoy ongoing activities held by the Shanghai International Arts Festival.
The Rebirth of Huangpu River's Industrial Legacy
The row of 48-meter-high concrete barrels is no doubt the most eye-catching part of this granary, a throwback to the industrial age.
This is the famous Minsheng Wharf 80-thousand-ton Silo, which used to be the biggest granary in Asia.
There are plenty of open areas around the granary filled with metal sculptures, wooden art, and you can enjoy views of the entire Yangpu Bridge on the north side.
The ground floor and top floors of The Silo are the main exhibition spaces.
Outside Escalator is the Biggest Hit
One feature that’s getting a lot of attention here is an escalator built on the facade which makes it looks like a floating tunnel clinging to the outside surface of the building.
You can take the escalator to get to the top exhibition floor directly and when you’re on it, you can appreciate expansive views of the Huangpu River and Minsheng Wharf.
Combination of Industrial Legacy and Art
Other than the floating escalator, the silo itself hasn’t changed much.
There are going to be 4 themed exhibitions and 12 special events here over the next several months. The themed exhibitions will all be held on the ground floor inside the silos, each silo is going to exhibit works of 1 or 2 artists.
