5 Chinese Chain Restaurants You Should Know
There are so many restaurants in Shanghai it can be hard to figure out what’s what. Especially when it comes to Chinese chain restaurants, here are some you’ve probably seen countless times, but never knew what the deal was.
Zhen Gong Fu
What is it? Zhen Gong Fu (or ‘Real Kung Fu’) has hundreds of locations across China. Headquartered in Guangzhou, they specialize in bowls of rice with meats like beef and pork. And just in case you couldn't tell-they use Bruce Lee as their logo.

What is it? This is a Chinese fast-food restaurant that specializes in noodles. Originally opened in Shanghai back in 1995, the original logo was a smiling face deemed way too similar to Colonel Sanders logo used by KFC. In 2005 the chain finally decided to change their logo, and now use a steaming bowl of soup instead.

What is it? Dong Fang Ji Bai (or ‘East Dawning’) is one of YUM China’s big brands, first opened in 2005. This quick service restaurant brand specializes in cheap Chinese cuisine and is primarily located in large coastal cities in China.
Yang's Fry Dumplings
What is it? This chain is probably the city’s most well-known for sesame-seed-and-scallion-coated shēngjiān (生煎; fried dumplings). Yang’s formed in Shanghai back in 1994 by, you guessed it, Mrs. Yang. Her mouth-watering recipe remains a secret to this day.
Yang Ming Yu
What is it? Founded only just in 2011 by Xiao Lu Yan, this is a 6,000 store chain, with countless outlets throughout mainland China, as well as numerous locations in Japan, Singapore, and Melbourne.
