Shanghai's Ten Tastiest Frankenfoods

2017-12-06 ShanghaiWOWeng

In the constant search for anything new and different, Shanghai restaurants are turning to the “frankenfood.” What is a frankenfood, you ask? It is basically the mash-up of two different food items into something else. One of the most famous hybrid foods in recent history is the 2013 invention of the cronut by Dominique Ansel. That craze reached Shanghai and many more. Read on to find where to eat some of Shanghai’s most creative dishes.

The Blind Pig Bourbon and Smokehouse

Pulled pork baos (RMB 48) served in a bamboo steamer

We love that a bit of Asian fusion has gotten mixed up in the Frankenfood craze. At the Blind Pig, they take a traditional BBQ pulled pork sandwich and serve it in snow white, fluffy steamed bao buns. The smoked pulled pork and blueberry chipotle BBQ sauce are offset nicely by julienned veggies.

Bordertown

Cross-section of the sinfully delightful Frito Pie Burgerito (RMB 78)

Purveyors of Mexican-American border specialties, Bordertown, probably have the only version of Frito pie in town. Frito pie is basically chili and Fritos with fixings, and at Bordertown, they add a burger and throw it all in a tortilla. You won’t regret trying it.

Little Catch

This bowl of laksa poke (RMB 80) will be on the menu until spring of next year

We weren’t quite sure about Little Catch messing with laksa, but after a rich, warm bowl with mussels and shrimp we have been converted. Subbing out noodles for rice is actually a great idea as it soaks up the flavorful soup, we also do not mind the poke toppings (cashews, roe, nori) one bit.

The Milkshake Bar

Delicious layers of red velvet pancakes (RMB 65) at The Milkshake Bar

While it might be their milkshakes bringing us all to the yard, The Milkshake Bar has some amazing food items as well. One of their best inventions is the combination of red velvet with pancakes. It is topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a hard candy little ducky, just in case you needed even more sugar.

OH.MY.BURGER

Ciao Bello! (RMB 70) at OH.MY.BURGER

When it comes to OH.MY.BURGER, it is really hard to decide which frankenfood to include. The spaghetti burger takes the ramen burger concept one step further, putting the patty on noodles with thought out toppings such as roasted zuchhini, radicchio, mozzarella and parsley gremolata.

Oriental House

At Oriental House they turn mei gan cai kou rou (RMB 38) into a Western-style casserole

It’s no surprise that Asian-fusion restaurant, Oriental House, has a frankenfood on their tapas-style sharing menu. The surprise is that they combined Zhejiang preserved vegetables with stewed Iberian pork and baked it with ooey, gooey cheese for an East meets West comfort food explosion.

Strictly Cookies

Strictly Cookies combines a brownie and a cookie for one amazing treat (RMB50/5pc)

How much do we love Strictly Cookies? So, so very much! And one of our favorites is the decadent cross between a cookie and brownie. The rich chocolate treat’s got a bit of crisp on the outside and so much fudgey goodness on the inside. We honestly can’t get enough of it.

Union Trading Company

Union Trading Company subs tater tots for tortilla chips in their yummy t’achos (RMB 68)

This happy merger of tater tots and nachos made it on our list of best nachos just this past summer and we are still raving about them. The crisp tots are topped with perfect chili, melted cheese, sour cream and scallions. The negroni on the side is optional, but highly recommended.

White Castle

White Castle packs a lot of flavor into this spicy tofu slider (RMB 15)

If an American fast food chain wants to do well in China, they need to make concessions to the local market, and this spicy tofu slider merges the famous steamed beef slider with little bursts of onion and mala doufu flavor. It’s not up everyone’s alley, but we like the salty numbing spice, and the price is just right.

Woody Baker

The hallmark of a cronut is the crisp layers of laminated pastry, topping optional.

While cronuts began in New York, rest assured you can get your hands on them in Shanghai at chain bakery, Woody Baker. They have options such as matcha, banana and fresh banana, and most hover around the RMB 26 mark. We actually prefer the original custard (RMB 18).

Xixi Bistro

This delicious terrine gives hong shao rou (RMB 68) the French treatment

The hong shao rou terrine at Xixi Bistro is a complete meal. It comes in a metal box with rice and a side of spinach salad with pomelo and nuts and some pickles. The texture of the terrine traps the saucy good flavor you want from hong shao rou. We could also see this served on baguette like a banh mi.
