F&B News Bites: Tacos, Deli Delights and New Summer Menus

Sophie Steiner ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-12-01

Another month past and another month full of exciting new restaurants and openings for Shanghai. Going forward, plan to spend most of your time inside as the plum rains hit and the steamy humidity permeates the entire city. Luckily, we have a number of AC-filled spots with updated menus and creative flavors to satisfy your endlessly wanting palettes. Travel from Mexico to Canada, from Italy to Turkey and into the future with A.I., all while staying in the comfort of Shanghai by exploring this month’s new openings, new menus and closings.

Ridiculously good tacos have finally hit Shanghai, and we can’t stay away! At Tacolicious, the brain child of Logan Brouse (from Logan’s Punch), Adrian Wall from Joe’s Pizza, and Saira Shaza and Thijs Oomens from BYFO Hot Sauce, you can score Fried Fish Tacos, Braised Beef Tacos, and Steak Asado to name a few, as well as other south-of-the-border favorites like Black Bean and Grilled Corn Ensalada and Mexican Corn on the Cob. For fusion tacos, check out the Szechuan Twice Cooked Pork.

Tacoliscious also launched a Brunch Menu with free flow margaritas and beer for RMB 150 as well as a la carte selections of motor smoker bacon and omelet tacos, smoke salmon and chipotle cream cheese, chicken asado, and BBQ pulled pork for RMB 40. Make sure not to miss the house-made horchata! They are still in soft opening at the moment, but look forward to their opening party in mid-July, where you can soak up some sun along with your margarita on their rooftop, which is located in Brad Turley’s old Goga space.

The Chop Chop Club are starting up a new social concept sharing table every week on Fridays and Saturdays starting 9:30pm sharp; a three-course menu of the day at a sociable price (RMB 300). With one table, limited seating, a blind menu and drink selections at RMB 50, you're going to want to book ahead to ensure you get in on this.

On the downside, the wine and tapas bar Q.V. on Wuding Lu is no more. Instead a everyone's favorite gourmet Italian deli has opened in its place - Alimentari & Degusteria - for all those Jing'an-ers needing to satisfy their capicola, prosciutto, formagella and pecorino cravings.

Seafood lovers unite! The new summer menu at The Cannery just launched on June 25th, and it’s the perfect spot for a date night, client dinner, or fun friendly catch-up. Sample your way through the Clam Chowder Poutine, Lobster Uni Tacos with Miso Chili Butter, and for bigger appetites, make sure to order the Grand Salami, the largest meat plate in Shanghai!

Along with the Cannery, our favorite hunter-gatherer food vibes restaurant, The Nest, also recently launched their spring menu which is filled with Canadian favorites like Venison Heart Tartare, the Forest Soup (one of our top picks with it’s rich and creamy blend of fermented white asparagus, morel mushrooms, and cheddar), and the Bold Icelandic Halibut, panfried with butter and crayfish jus.

Pair each course with whimsical, inventive cocktails created by head bartender Mack. Don’t miss the The Broccoli and Cheddar cocktail, which tastes as crazy as it sounds! The earthy sweetness of the broccoli comes through, brightened by the addition of lemon juice and sea salt, yet it’s mellowed out by the cheddar cheese garnish. The Ray Ray is my kind of dessert, a sweet, raisin-infused Laphroig 10-year single malt garnished with chocolate-coated raisins.

Three on the Bund's Cantonese restaurant, Canton Table, has just launched a new summer menu full of beautiful dishes that we simply couldn't get enough of. Whether it's homestyle cooking or sophisticated delicacies, all adhere to the best and extensive selections that result in dishes that we will happily eat over and over again. This summer be sure to try their Home-Made Cantonese Roast Beef Cheef with Sweet Bean Sauce (RMB 128 / person), Three-cups Duck with Tender Ginger (RMB 138 / portion) and a succulent Sauteed M5 Beef with Mushroom and Water Chestnut (RMB 198 / portion).

The Extraction Lab Coffee, a specialty coffee café ventured by three Singaporeans just opened on Maoming South Road. The coffee is sourced from Common Man Coffee Roasters in Singapore and Five Senses Coffee from Melbourne. Believing that good coffee goes hand-in-hand with brunch, they are serving an all day brunch that we are really looking forward to checking out. The space is designed in a Nordic minimalist style with a lot of white, open space and wood; the perfect spot for a light meal and perusing the internet.

Another wine bar has opened in Shanghai near IAPM mall, but La Galerie is a step above the rest with it’s wide selection of reasonably priced wines and champagne. Stop by for a glass, a bottle, or some friendly conversation with the attractive French owner.

Everyone has their eye on Columbia Circle where a spread of incredible restaurants are all in soft opening. Start at Blackbird’s new sister restaurant, which is in soft opening on the first floor, boasting an elaborate display of infusion-based cocktails and equally creative bar snacks and sharing plates. We are eagerly awaiting the opening of Table Black on the second floor, a tasting table concept for groups to enjoy meals composed 18-24 bite-sized courses from different regions of Asia in a laid-back friend’s living room vibe environment. Next, hit up Sumo Cat, a chain ramen restaurant hailing from Japan, and finally bee-bop your way over to Inkwood, a contemporary global cuisine lounge.

Bice, a new reasonably priced, family-friendly Italian joint opened its doors in the Borui Hotel near Hongqiao. For simple, honest Italian-inspired dishes, you can’t go wrong with the tender steaks, expertly cooked al dente pasta dishes, tiramisu served in a martini glass, and cream filled cannolis that taste like they're straight out of a Sicilian bakery. Swing over for their budget-friendly RMB 158 three-course lunch special or for the full dinner menu.

We couldn’t be more excited about Taian Table’s new 2.0 menu concept. We went to try it out last week and were blown away but the utterly beautiful dishes that packed a punch with unique flavor combinations. After two years, 14 menus, and over 200 dishes, we gladly welcome menu 15, where diners can select eight dishes from the various classic and specials menus.

The Shanghai craft beer institution Boxing Cat Brewery’s long awaited new location on Yongfu Lu will finally open in the beginning of July. Look for the same well-crafted brews and Western comfort food in a more modern, open space. We are super excited to see what creative creations Kelly Lee and Lee Tseng have in store for us this time.

The classic, casual Turkish restaurant Pasha has moved down the street to a more open venue with the addition of rooftop seating. The new spot will be open to clientele in the beginning of July on Nanchang Lu, boasting new dishes and wine pairings featuring wines from Torbali and Diyarbakir.

Gin lovers at the ready! Sir Elly's at The Peninsula Shanghai are due to be hosting a very British summer promotion with some timeless gin and tonic creations. Offering an extraordinary selection of 12 premium international and Chinese gins, nine first class tonics, 10 fragrant botanicals and eight fresh fruits all are to be mixed and matched to create a precisely tailored summer beverage. Each custom-built gin and tonic will be around RMB 120 and you'll have a staggering 8,640 possible combinations.
