As the third airport in Shanghai, Shanghai Nantong International Airport plans to cover an area of about 670,000 m², with an estimated investment of RMB 50 billion.
The future traffic is estimated to reach 80 million passengers, higher than Pudong International airport. It will be a 4F ranked international airport, which is the highest class assigned to an airport.
Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Pudong International Airport are both about 100 km away from the "third airport of Shanghai". After determining the location, the authority plans to connect it with Pudong and Hongqiao airport through high-speed railways and other transportation.
In the future, a new railroad from Shanghai to Hefei will be built.
In addition, the already opened Shanghai - Suzhou - Nantong Railway Phase I directly connects Shanghai Hongqiao Station and Shanghai Station, while Phase II is planned to connect Pudong Airport and Shanghai East Station.
When Shanghai Nantong International Airport is completed, Shanghai will become the only city with three international airports in China.
