The exhibition title A Poet on the Cruise comes from the film of the same name by Dongzi. Accompanied by a tranquil journey on the sea, Dongzi unveils her solo exhibition at the Leo Gallery, presenting a collection of her fresh creations in film and sculpture. Dongzi, an exhibiting artist in Leo Gallery's inaugural year, brings a unique presentation to the gallery space following a sixteen-year hiatus.

Dongzi is a maverick who inhabits her own realm, traversing between fairy tales and reality, and oscillating between ancient and futuristic realms. She views various media as gifts from the Creator. Dongzi's Wheel of Time, a collaboration with musician Huanqing and Swiss sculptor Morgan, marks a milestone in her film journey. A Poet on the Cruise invites viewers on a mesmerizing voyage, chronicling the introspection of the artist's son, a young poet, as he undergoes a self-spiritual catharsis amidst the moonlit ocean. "He is akin to a seagull with the mind of an architect, soaring freely between the realms of his imagination." Through the screen, viewers catch a glimpse of the artist's distinctive spiritual universe.

Dongzi's global travels imbue her sculptures with the poetic essence of nature. Walking Tree draws inspiration from the artist's journey to Inner Mongolia, offering an abstract portrayal of "man" and delving into the theme of "life and freedom". Tree branches, reaching out freely in the intangible cosmos, become the veins of the space, endeavoring to reconnect with the earth as they journey, seeking spiritual transcendence. Similarly, Twelve Little Birdmen explores the theme of nature, portraying humans as flying souls perched on trees. The figures, half-human and half-bird, sit leisurely together, seemingly engaging in discussions about the evolution of humanity.

Dongzi's creations are spontaneous and untamed, resonating with the land, mountains, and clouds. They possess the simplicity of a children's song, yet harbor profound truths within their innocence. She approaches each day's journey with a playful spirit, treating the opening of her eyes as the commencement of a daily exhibition. Through this showcase, Dongzi hopes to embark on a collective earthly journey with her viewers.

About the Artist

东子 Dongzi

Dongzi, originally named Wang Dong, was born in Beijing, graduated from the Beijing Arts and Crafts School in 1988 and stayed at the university for five years. In 1994, she was awarded a French national scholarship to France and now lives and works in Switzerland.

Dongzi's works cover a wide range of painting, installation and video. Her ceramic creations have studied and inherited the traditional folk blue and white ceramic technique, which has pushed the development of Chinese ceramics and influenced people's exploration of a free way of life. Dongzi's creations are spontaneous and free-spirited, often originate from daily life, resonate with the environment, and crystallize her insights into life, forming philosophical dewdrops that she gently places on paper, turning them into a subtle Zen mood. Due to her love of travelling, she often integrates her creations with her journeys and explores spiritual sprouts in the world of fairy tales and myths.
In 1996, Dongzi was invited to artists' residences in Barcelona and was part of the invitation exhibitions. Her works have been widely exhibited in art museums and galleries worldwide, including the He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, the Leo Gallery in Shanghai, the Montreux Gallery in Switzerland, and the Swan Stone Castle Gallery in Sweden etc. Her video work, The Wheel of Time, was selected by many film festivals and won five awards, including the Druk International Film Festival and the Sofia Art Film Awards. In addition, he has also published books such as The Cigarette Case, The French Lady and Her Ceramics, and Life in Dali.
