7 summer beers to buy at The Beer Lady's new mega shop
The Beer Lady – you know it, you love it. It boasts one of the largest (if not the largest) selections of local and international beers in Shanghai, and now there's a whole new mega shop on Kaixuan Lu in Changning (main entrance on Yanan Xi Lu), just around the corner from the original beer marketplace. And with around 3,000 different bottles, this one's got about 30 percent more on offer than the first.
And there's a whole lotta space for drinking those beers, too... but without those deathly bar prices.
In honour of The Beer Lady's new shop and the arrival Shanghai's stickiest season and its trailing companion – a thirst for cold beer – we tried and tested seven summer beers on offer, from fruity to refreshing to a bit off-the-wall. So get out your sandals, dawn your shades and pop open some of these heat-busting brews today.
1. Mongozo Coconut, 40RMB
If you’re daydreaming of warm sands and cool seas, try this surprisingly pleasing fair trade Belgian brew – it tastes like a tropical vacation in a bottle. It’s super coconutty and pretty sweet, so you won’t see us drinking this all day long, but one’s a nice treat.
2. Dugges Tropic x Stillwater Artisanal Tropic Thunder Sour Fruit Ale, 70RMB
Sour ales aren’t for everyone, but if you’re into them, this collab between Swedish brewer Dugges and Maryland, USA brewer Stillwater Artisanal is more than worth a try. It's a malted wheat beer brewed with mango and passionfruit juices, making for the ultimate sweet, tart and sour ale.
3. Siren Craft Brew Summer Citra Party IPA, 61RMB
Straightforward but pleasant, subtle notes of citrus brighten up this characteristically hoppy Indian pale ale from famed British brewery Siren Craft Brew.
4. The Wild Beer Co. Sleeping Lemons, 74RMB
The lemons are definitely not sleeping in this unique beer from England's The Wild Beer Co. It's a gose brew – top-fermented, unfiltered wheat beer, not so far off from a sour ale – and this one's bound to make your lips pucker with its very sour and slightly salty taste.
5. Mikkeller Chill Pils, 79RMB
In the midst of our summer beer search, could we really resist a bottle with an ice lolly on it? This Danish pilsner is brewed with fresh orange juice, resulting in bitter orange flavour with a hoppy bite.
6. Pécsi Elderflower Radler, 25RMB
From Hungarian Pécs Brewery, this tall and cheap radler (beer and soda or juice mix) is super light and goes down real easy. Its sugared floral and citrus flavours make it taste kind of like a pink grapefruit soda. Very refreshing and ideal for those who may tend to shy away from beer and opt for wine coolers and the like.
7. ReBerg Black Rabbit HEEY 2 Mango Fruit Beer, 20RMB
A bit strange, but worth a try at this price, this quirky brew has a strong mango flavour (albeit artificial), but doesn't bear the same sweetness as the Mongozo Coconut. It's also brewed right here in Shanghai.
The Beer Lady 1010 Kaixuan Lu, near Yanan Xi Lu, Changning district.
