Unravel's anniversary show to feature award-winner Fiona Wright

Kenny Ong TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-11

On Thursday 22 March at WeWork on Weihai Lu, Unravel will mark a storied first year in intimate yarnin' with a show dedicated to womanhood and featuring the award-winning poet and essayist Fiona Wright, winner of Australia's Stella Prize. Unravel will also be donating a portion of the night's revenues to Lifeline Shanghai, a free, English-speaking emotional support hotline.

For those unfamiliar, Unravel is monthly live storytelling event, featuring a curated group of storytellers who share authentic life stories loosely based on a given theme. This month's theme, in honour of International Women's Day, is 'Feel Like A Woman', with the further prompt: 'With purpose, power, and parity for all. Inspired by the multitude of ways womanhood is and has been felt, understood, related to, represented, transgressed, embraced, celebrated.'

Unravel founder Clara Davis has said that the 1997 Shania Twain song 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman' was not the 'original inspiration' for the theme (that would be International Women's Day), but 'a very convenient additional inspiration... [that] will likely come up during the show.' Let's not leave things to chance, Clara.

Fiona Wright, who will share her own take on the theme, is a featured author in this year's Shanghai International Literary Festival. Her writing is known for anchoring big ideas and contexts with the deep intimacy of personal experience, her award-winning book of essays Small Acts of Disappearing leading readers through the question of hunger in general, to eating disorders, to travel, family and literary history.

Unravel will donate a portion of the night's revenue from merch and refreshment sales to Lifeline Shanghai. Custom, commemorative posters from the past year of Unravel events will be on sale, with 50 percent of poster profits going to Lifeline Shanghai.

A number of popular names in the food and drink world (Duvel, Homeslice and Strictly Cookies) will be peddling their bites and drinks, and Unravel will donate at least 25 percent of the total revenue to Lifeline Shanghai. Finally, Unravel will also accept donations from the Unravel community on behalf of Lifeline Shanghai.

The whole night sounds like some real chicken soup for the soul not to be missed.
