Xi stresses implementation of major policies, integrity of leading officials


President Xi Jinping is urging full implementation of the major tasks set forth at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).


He made the remarks to the party's top officials during a meeting over the past two days.


The general secretary of the CPC Central Committee said words are not enough, and actions are needed.


He urged leading officials to understand their duties, identify flaws and weaknesses, and work out proper solutions.


He also stressed that the Party's campaign against undesirable work styles will not be stopped.


Xi offers condolences over tropical storm losses in Philippines


Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended condolences to his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte over the heavy casualties and damages caused by Tropical Storm Tembin.


In a message dated Monday, the Chinese leader pledged that China stands ready to offer emergency assistance to the disaster areas for rescue and relief.


Tropical Storm Tembin started lashing Mindanao in the southern Philippines last Friday and triggered massive flooding and mudslides.


It has left more than 300 people dead or missing and 70,000 others homeless.


China-Afghanistan-Pakistan foreign ministers' dialogue held in Beijing


The first round of a tripartite meeting among the Foreign Ministers of China, Afghanistan and Pakistan has been held in Beijing.


Foreign Ministers Wang Yi, Salahuddin Rabbani and Khawaja Asif have attended the meeting.


They've discussed various issues, including political trust and reconciliation, development cooperation and terrorism.


The three sides also agreed to discuss a plan to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan.


Chinese vice premier inspects 2022 Winter Games venues


Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli has wrapped up a two-day inspection tour of a co-host city for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.


During his time in Zhangjiakou, the vice premier called for high-quality, efficient construction of all Olympic infrastructure.


He reiterated that the facilities should not only meet Games-time needs but also serve the long-term development goals of the region.


As a co-host city of the 2022 event, Zhangjiakou is set to stage most of the Olympic skiing events.


Chinese oracle bones included on UNESCO Memory of the World Register


Chinese oracle bone inscriptions have been included on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.

Oracle bones are pieces of ox or turtle skeletons which were used for divination during the late Shang Dynasty some 3,700 years ago, from 1,600 to around 1,000 B.C.E.


They bear the earliest form of ancient Chinese writing, as well as contain important historical information about the Shang people.

Around 160,000 pieces of oracle bone have been found so far.


Out of the 4,300 characters inscribed on them, less than half have been deciphered.


China releases new rules to regulate outbound investment


China's top economic planner has released new rules to streamline administrative procedures and strengthen regulation over outbound investment.


The new rules waived a provision from a 2014 rule that requires companies to report project information beforehand when bidding for overseas projects worth over 300-million US dollars.


Under the new rules, enterprises from most industries will only need to complete record filings when seeking outbound investment.


The new rules will also simplify approval procedures and relax requirements on the deadlines for companies to obtain approvals or file records.


China issues 4,819 new version permanent residence cards to foreigners


News data shows that China's new version of permanent residence identity cards to foreigners have reached over 4,800 people since the project was launched in June this year.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, the new cards are embedded with chips and can be read by machines.


China has been carrying out reforms to foreign residents' identity cards, aiming at making the cards recognizable by machines so that the owners can easily access railways, civil aviation, hotels, and banks.


According to the ministry, lists of holders of the new cards will be announced later.


U.S. announces major cut to UN budget


The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations has announced a 285 mill 51 29337 51 14987 0 0 3761 0 0:00:07 0:00:03 0:00:04 3760ion U.S. dollar cut to next year's UN operating budget.


Ambassador Nikki Haley has pointed her finger at the inefficiency and overspending of the world body for the budget cut.

But the move is believed to be retaliation for a recent motion at the UN General Assembly which condemned President Donald Trump's decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.


Trump warned that he would cut funding to countries that didn't support his decision.


Currently About 22 percent of the UN's budget comes from the U.S.


Toshiba unveils affiliate's accounting misconduct


Japan's Toshiba has discovered accounting misconduct in one of its affiliates which conducts electrical installation work.


Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solutions has been found attempting to cover losses of a money-losing project by attributing its expenses to another profitable business.


The misconduct involves nearly 840 thousand U.S. dollars.


In 2015, Toshiba was hit by another accounting scandal, where it admitted padding its profits between 2008 and 2014.
