What else could be more enticing than sipping a cold drink by the cool water as summer in the city starts to heat up? Yearning as you might be for a getaway to the Aegean, you’re stuck tending bar. But there’s an alternative for supplementing your vitamin sea in the heart of Shanghai – sipping on the amber spirit from remotest Greece: Metaxa!
As Metaxa’ s motto says, “Don’t drink it. Explore it.” And now the Greek herb-infused brandy has created an intriguing liquid journey, running until May 27, for cocktail lovers to explore ten different cocktails made with the amber spirit at ten bars around Shanghai. To give consumers an extra layer of mystery, the event ingeniously features tarot cards – each tarot card represents a Metaxa value, and when turned over, it leads to a venue with a specific drink for them to discover.
How much does each glass of Mediterranean inspiration cost? If you’ve got quick fingers, it’s… nothing! For those that fortune favours, each bar will be serving 25 free drinks – visit Metaxa’s official event page, generate your e-invitation, take it to the bar to see if your luck is in! And… you also have the chance to win a “City Explorer” package. So act fast!
The cocktails waiting for your consumption were created by ten Shanghai bartenders, who were invited to make their own Metaxa based drinks inspired by one of the ten Metaxa values. If you’d like to feel the breeze of Metaxa’s Greek magic yourself, here are the recipes to inspired your own cocktail exploration:
If you find yourself inspired by these creations and are ready to make your own, you’d better get to know the amber spirit first. So here’s an explanation of how the unique product of Metaxa is made.
The unique spirit character of Metaxa owes its structure to the distillates maturing slowly underground in the House of Metaxa. Selected by the Metaxa Master, these distillates are chosen to age in smaller oak casks, blended with Muscat wines when the time is right. Meticulously cared for, the Muscat grapes are grown in garden-sized vineyards exclusively from the island of Samos – the “terraces” of the Aegean protected by stone walls that keep the soil from washing away – and picked by hand. A secret bouquet of infused May rose petals and Mediterranean herbs is then given as one last touch.
