Mojito 2021 | New CHEERS Rum, New Cocktail Twists
2020 was the year Jay Chou’s song “Mojito” inspired people to try the classic Cuban cocktail of the same name. And 2021? It’s a new year, CHEERS has a new rum and it’s time for new twists.
First, here’s a quick recipe for a mojito. (If you check a half-dozen recipes, you will find a half-dozen variations on this!)
Add a half-dozen mint leaves, two spoons of fine sugar and juice from one lime—squeeze it right in there—to a glass and muddle the ingredients, just enough to release the fragrant oil of that mint. Then add ice and 50 ml of white rum – try Capitan Bucanero Blanco, a slightly sweet rum new at CHEERS – and stir. Finally, top with soda, put on your most colorful tropical themed shirt, and drink.

If you’ve been there and done that, and want a mojito with a twist – let’s call it a more-jito -- here are three fun options.

Berry Power
Add extra fruit for a flavor boost. Strawberry works well, although if the fruit is especially ripe and sweet, you might want to reduce the sugar in the recipe. Other berries like raspberries and blackberries can also do the trick. Or you can go seasonal and try yangmei, which is now showing up in fruit shops.

Keep your drink effervescent while giving it an extra kick with sparkling wine. Champagne is delicious, but expensive, so a Cava tends to be a practical solution. You can also swap the soda water for a hard seltzer, such as Dutch Vodka Orange, which will give your mojito even more citrus power.

Want to switch the mint for something new? Try rosemary. Or basil and cucumber for an intriguing and refreshing change of pace.
And if you are feeling lazy and would rather not break a sweat making drinks, you can always get a big bottle of Cruz Caribe ready-to-drink mojito. In fact, CHEERS has a deal this month, with a bottle each of the Cruz Caribe mojito and caipirinha for just RMB144.
