"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore;
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine, that's amore."
If you've had your fair share of mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival, why not take inspiration from this 1953 song and indulge in another food that evokes our nearest celestial body: pizza.
This moon-shaped treat is most excellent because, one, it is easy to share, and two, it is fun with wine. And because both are easily delivered, it takes little effort to organize a pizza and wine party at home.

The great thing about pizza is that, like wine, it is so diverse, whether you get a tomato or white sauce, thin-crust or thick, or a huge range of toppings that covers all kinds of meats, cheeses, veggies and fruits, including durian--check out the suggested wine pairing for that stinky fellow below.

On top of that, there are so many different styles. In just the past month, my neighborhood has added fluffy-crusted Rome-style pizza, often sold by the slice ("al taglio") in rectangular form, and New York-style pizza, with thicker crust at the edges but thin inside so you can fold it. These are in addition to many other options, notably Neapolitan pizza, featuring very thin crust that blisters due to the high cooking heat.

So how about pizza and wine? Here are a few fun options, although it's best to order three or four pizzas and three or four wines, and test some pairings with friends.
Margherita
Pizza Margherita, a classic with tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil goes with light fruity wines featuring enough acidity to match that sauce. Go for a Sangiovese or for that Nerello Mascalese on sale at CHEERS this month, a wine that offers lots of flexibility for pizza.

Pepperroni
Pepperoni takes things up a notch with its strongly flavored spicy meat and needs something rich and fruity. That Nerello Mascalese could again do the trick, although you might want a bottle with a bit more power, like its heavier Sicilian sibling, Nero d'Avola.

Hawaiian
Then there is Hawaiian pizza, which creates bitter feuds between those for and against pineapple. Given a combination of salty ham and sweet fruit as toppings, a slightly sweet Riesling or even Moscato d'Asti is worth a try. Or skip right to beer and see how the passion fruit-driven Appenzeller Maracuja plays with that pineapple.

Durian Pizza
As for our stinky friend, the durian pizza, it tends to be creamy and rich and, frankly, a bit funky. You can try an unoaked Chardonnay--a Chablis--to cut through that heaviness.

Finally, and for the record: when you order your pie, give pineapple a try, that's amore.
