Oh My Godello! ‘Drops of the Sea’ Sails into CHEERS
Here’s a fun stamp for your grape passport: Godello. It’s the Spanish grape featured in the white wine “Gotas de Mar”, which translates as “Drops of the Sea”, by Hammeken Cellars. A wine that is now available at CHEERS and can be enjoyed as a tasting journey of three or four days.

AROMA
The dominant aroma is pear, fresh and slightly nutty, along with touches of honey, peach and a saltiness a bit like ocean spray, which seems appropriate given the wine’s name and the vineyard’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Take a long whiff, close your eyes and imagine enjoying a sea breeze.

TASTE
In terms of taste, the initial impression is a light, dry, fruity and playful wine, with some underlying richness, helped in part by eight months of barrel aging. There is grapefruit, white peach and apple character along with a tingly minerality.
If you pace drinking your bottle over a few hours, or a few days, that playfulness and richness become increasingly supple and elegant, with a long bracing finish that features a zingy lemon rind sensation and a slight spiciness. I enjoyed this wine, about a glass a day, over nearly a week and liked it more and more.

Godella was a hard grape to find 40 years ago, but the grape has been making a comeback in its home in northwest Spain, although it is still relatively new to many wine consumers. And the brand Gotas de Mar, using grapes from vines aged 15 to 25 years old, is also fairly new to CHEERS.
You can try it for free on June 30, 6PM at the mini wine school held at all CHEERS shops. And as a warmup, you can also check out another CHEERS newcomer, “Life from Stone” Sauvignon Blanc by South Africa’s Springfield Estate, which will be featured at all shops on June 23, 6PM.
