牧神节    |    Lupercalia Festival

在古罗马，2月中旬的牧神节(也就是现在庆祝情人节的时间)，人们会举行盛大的典礼来庆祝，而典礼上远不止有葡萄酒、巧克力和玫瑰。

In Ancient Rome, things got quite wild during the Lupercalia festival in mid-February, about the time we now celebrate Valentine’s Day, and went way beyond wines, chocolates and roses.

牧神节的特色是一群半裸的年轻人，身上抹着献祭的山羊的血，在街道上奔跑。

The Lupercalia festival featured half-naked young men, anointed with the blood of a sacrificed goat, racing through the streets. 

他们拿着羊皮鞭，向观众挥舞，“引人注目的旁观者，尤其搭配羊皮条的女性，”《牛津经典词典》写道。

They carried strips of the beast’s skin and flailed at spectators, “striking bystanders, especially women, with [the] goat-skin thongs,” states the Oxford Classical Dictionary.

It sounds like the Running of the Bulls, but less dangerous, with some spectators seeking to be hit by a goat skin in a belief that it increased fertility.

Lupercalia was banned by the Pope in the late fifth century but not forgotten: William Shakespeare featured the festival in his play Julius Caesar.

Fast forward to 2022 and mid-February now features Valentine’s Day. While today’s traditions are much different, we can still take inspiration from the past and slaughter (translation: guzzle) a bottle of wine, anoint our cheeks with a bit of that vino and run (fully clothed) through the streets.

不过，21世纪的现代社会，小编不建议你用山羊鞭或其他东西打路人（文明社会，当心碰瓷儿），除非双方达成一致。

I don’t recommend hitting bystanders with a goat skin, or anything else, however—unless you get their consent.

本着古罗马的精神，为什么不把这种祭祀酒变成意大利酒呢?

And in the spirit of Ancient Rome, why not make that sacrificial wine an Italian one?

阿玛罗尼——听起来有点像amore，意为 “爱” ——是维罗纳市北部瓦尔波利切拉丘陵地区的一种经典风格。

Amarone—which sounds a bit like amore, the Italian word for “love”—is a classic style from the hilly Valpolicella area in the northern province of Verona.

这款酒有什么特别之处？采摘下来的葡萄会被晒干以增加糖的浓度，这是一种耗时的过程，被称为Appassimento （部分风干的葡萄酿造方法）。像小齐家的紫绒阿玛罗尼半干红这样的葡萄酒充满浓郁的黑樱桃和腌制李子的香气，以及带有一些辛辣、烟熏和咖啡的味道。

What makes this wine special? The picked grapes are dried to increase sugar concentration, part of a time-consuming process called Appassimento. Expect a wine like CHEERS’ Zironda Amarone Valpolicella to have concentrated dark cherry and preserved plum character along with some spicy, smoky and coffee notes.
