Events That Won't Leave You Hungover, Nov 7-11
Our Events Watch series aims to highlight happenings that aren't focused on alcohol and drinking, but instead take a more educational or productive approach. Events include comedy, talks, networking events, markets, and dinners.
Ongoing til Dec 2
Following the
success of their exhibition Night Museum, Chao Hotel has launched the
second exhibition in their basement. The group show, titled Delirium Warehouse, is much darker – literally and figuratively – than an
exhibition you might expect to find at a hotel in the heart of Sanlitun
but the gamble pays off. Each of the 30-odd artists was provided a
pallet rack to decorate with their own works or materials, making for a
varied and consuming exploration of the space, which takes some eerie
turns.
RMB 90 (1-5pm), RMB 120 (6-11pm, includes a cocktail). Daily 1-11pm. Chao Hotel
Wednesday, Nov 7
Democrats Abroad
settle in The Local all day on Wednesday for a viewing party in honor of
the US midterm elections. Breakfast kicks off at 8.30am as the polls
begin to close and viewers are encouraged to spend the day holed-up to
provide their collective will for a Donkey win. If you can't work
remotely, head over at 5pm, when there'll be a secondary party to
celebrate (or commiserate) the results.
Free. 8.30am onward. The Local Bar & Grill
Thursday, Nov 8
Billed as
Beijing's only classical music open-mic night, on Thursday The Bookworm
invites musicians to "get involved or simply bask in the glory of some
of Beijing's best international classical musicians." All instruments
are welcome and the event will be hosted by Rob Wendt, a classical
pianist who has performed all over the world.
Free. 8-10.30pm. The Bookworm
Friday, Nov 9
The Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, officially kicks off on Wednesday this year but climaxes three days later on account of that day coinciding with the darkest night of the Hindu lunar month. Much like China's Spring Festival, Diwali is a homecoming for many families and is celebrated with feasts, music, and dancing, which is exactly what both Ganges in Wudaokou will offer on Friday (6pm onwards, RMB 88) or Punjabi on Saturday (7pm onwards, RMB 150).
Saturday, Nov 10
Beijing Experience
invites budding photographers to join them on this outing to Taoranting
Park for a day that is part photo workshop, part picnic. "A relaxing
spot seldom visited by tourists, Taoranting Park is the perfect place to
improve your photography skills ... This is the only park in Beijing
with an exclusive area that recreates the most famous pavilions in
China, creating a fascinating landscape with rocks, water, bridges, and
buildings," describes the organizer.
10.45am-5pm. RMB 250. Taoranting Park
Sunday, Nov 11
You may have heard
that Nov 11 is this little holiday called Singles Day i.e. the biggest
consumerist day on the planet. So as to revolt against the rampant
shopping that consumes every Taobao-loving individual, this day of creative workshops wants to lure you away from your phone so as to
practice creative writing, drama, visual art, art therapy, and dance.
Best yet, the organizers have made their point by offering the whole
thing for free!
Free. 9.30am-4pm. Crossboundaries
